Department 489 is part of the Integrated Power Systems (IPS) Directorate, which develops the COLUMBIA Class state-of-the-art electric drive propulsion system. The department supports development and construction of the electric drive system, including drives, controls, and power distribution. The Emulation Lab manages computer systems used to aid testing of electric drive propulsion system components. Its hardware runs in real time to mimic propulsion system performance. MATLAB/Simulink models emulate propulsion components that are not physically present during testing or reproduce real-world environmental conditions. The lab also maintains computer systems for developing, upgrading, and testing real-time systems. The Experienced Emulation Engineer works cooperatively with customers and support departments and is responsible for executing and overseeing Emulation computer systems. The role includes lab testing and troubleshooting of RTPE and LTE systems before deployment to test locations, and integration and testing of real-time propulsion-system model upgrades. Work is primarily in a lab and may sometimes take place in an industrial setting. The engineer also supports hardware and software identification, selection, and procurement for obsolescence and upgrades; integrates, troubleshoots, and tests upgraded hardware and software; and develops and maintains lab design and upgrade documentation, requirements, and test procedures. Occasional travel may be required, approximately 10%.
