About The Position

Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) is a community of high-performing public schools that utilizes a comprehensive approach to prepare students from preschool through high school for success in college and in life. We integrate academic rigor, community, family, and wellness to empower students to thrive in a culturally connected and changing world. Founded in 2000, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy students represent the neighborhood of MacArthur Park west of downtown Los Angeles, a community that is one of the most under-resourced and densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Currently, CNCA has six campuses that serve approximately 3,500 students from TK through 12th grade. Under the supervision of the Director of Expanded Learning, the Expanded Learning Intervention Specialist supports the TK-8 academic intervention program of Camino Nuevo. Coordination of support includes a variety of activities including data analysis, development of intervention course programming, professional development for intervention staff, and communication with students and families. The Expanded Learning Intervention Specialist must be a visionary, eager to be in the forefront of educational practices, and must embrace the challenge of demonstrating that public education in a low-income, primarily immigrant, multilingual area can succeed.

Requirements

  • Valid California Teaching Credential or equivalent (Multiple Subject Teaching Credential preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to implement varied classroom strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and identify key areas for intervention
  • Educational vision for and experience with low-income and/or minority students
  • Experience working with English language learners
  • Experience serving students with Special Needs
  • Commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of students

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Expanded Learning team, and establish goals and priorities in the area of intervention for the Expanded Learning team.
  • Contribute to the overall vision of the Expanded Learning programs of Camino Nuevo.
  • Serve as a member of the Instructional Team and contribute expertise in the area of intervention to inform the overall vision and strategy of the instructional team.
  • Support the development of strategic plan for the ongoing success of the Expanded Learning team
  • Support the research and development of a cohesive plan for intervention in the areas of English Language Development, Literacy and Math in grades pre-K through 12.
  • Have knowledge of the ways in which students are assessed and schools are held accountable on the CA Schools dashboard in order to plan strategically to support student achievement on the associated assessments (SBAC, ELPAC, etc.).
  • Contribute to the development of structures and processes to increase the level of excellence across all CNCA schools, and specifically as they relate to intervention.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of intervention through the use of key metrics to inform continuous improvement and strategic decision-making
  • Elevate challenges that arise in the context of intervention programming and work with the Sr. Director of Expanded learning to inform and improve work
  • Understand and navigate the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context facing urban charter schools and the students they serve
  • Partner with the Principal to hire, train, and support Intervention Teachers, working to ensure that they are effectively addressing the core academic needs of their group and motivating them to participate
  • Be on-site during Expanded Learning Intervention times in order to provide on-site support for Expanded Learning Intervention programs.
  • Design effective structures and curricula for intervention utilizing research to identify best practices and make curricular choices.
  • Maintain the established Expanded Learning intervention budget.
  • Make recommendations for budget prioritization and track the intervention expenditures.
  • Analyze school-wide student achievement data to determine areas of need for intervention.
  • Collaborate with Principal to coordinate and execute early intervention and targeted intervention programs through an RTI approach
  • Collaborate with sites and HSO Instructional Team to ensure that there is cohesion between expanded learning intervention and core instruction.
  • Collaborate with academic expanded learning vendors, providing guidance, support and oversight to ensure alignment with school policies and academic priorities.
  • Assist teachers and instructional staff in developing research based, instructional practices that support the development of students’ language, literacy, and mathematical background knowledge and concept development.
  • Collaborate with teachers and instructors to develop intervention plans for students who are below grade-level and/or struggling to meet teacher expectations.
  • Support the professional development of new and struggling teachers and instructors in their work with students who are below grade-level through systematic observation and feedback cycles, partnership with planning, and providing model lessons.
  • Oversee data collection and progress monitoring to determine the effectiveness of interventions, with a particular focus on Tier 2 intervention.
  • Provide training and technical assistance for Intervention staff, with a particular focus on Tier 2 intervention.
  • Develop and facilitate family orientations and workshops for expanded learning families about academic topics.
  • Participate actively in HSO events as a member of the Expanded Learning and Instructional teams.
  • Research, identify, and maintain inventory of intervention materials.
  • Maintain regular, punctual attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
