About The Position

Durham's favorite destination, the Museum of Life and Science, is seeking an Exhibit Fabricator II to bring science to life through hands-on fabrication, creative problem-solving, and the maintenance of interactive museum experiences. This skilled craftsperson will also direct shop tool maintenance and safety programs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Excellent wood working skills; proficient in finish carpentry.
  • In depth knowledge of table saws, chop saws, routers, band saws, sanders, nailers, and other wood working machinery and tools.
  • Project Management experience, including the demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks to completion simultaneously.
  • Skilled in mechanical/electrical troubleshooting.
  • Experience in industrial or exhibit fabrication.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success in a collaborative work environment.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Track record of proactively identifying issues, opportunities, and solutions.
  • General skills in computer basics, Internet, Windows, Spreadsheets.
  • Flexibility to work weekends (one weekend day required) and holidays and assist with other projects as needed.
  • Capable of climbing ladders, lifting 50 lbs., and working outdoors in changing weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Cabinet building / installation experience.
  • Experience with laminates.
  • CAD/ Sketch Up software knowledge.
  • 3D Printing; CNC Machine experience.
  • Museum Exhibits Fabrication / Maintenance experience.
  • Degree in Industrial Design or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as safety leader in the Exhibits Shop ensuring that all power tools are maintained, serviced, and properly operating in a safe manner. Recommends and specifies procurement of shop tools and supplies. Functions as principal trainer for medium to high-risk shop tools.
  • Performs daily upkeep, maintenance, and cleaning of museum exhibits, for both indoor and outside exhibit areas, accomplishing repairs to exhibits as necessary to help ensure that the exhibits continuously deliver safe, dependable, and satisfying interactions for our members and guests.
  • Performs opening and closing functions for outdoor and indoor exhibits as assigned, including inspecting exhibits for breakage, failure, or malfunctions.
  • Reports exhibit outages and collaborate to formulate plans for exhibits repair to bring exhibits back into operation in a timely manner.
  • Provides for effective and efficient shop layout and organization.
  • Develops / Creates / Builds prototypes with the Exhibits Team, including the directing the daily shop fabrication and prototyping activities.
  • Builds new exhibits and accessories.
  • Recommends improvements and/or redesigns for existing exhibits and implementation of these changes
  • Designs and/or adapts appropriate technologies to fulfill exhibit concepts and implements these in functioning prototypes.
  • Responsibilities for material planning /ordering.
  • Assist with installation of pop-up exhibits.
  • Coordinates Contractor work.
  • Model responsible behaviors to team.

  • Prioritize and handle multiple tasks, delegating when appropriate.
  • Develop and train others.
