About The Position

Work in collaboration with the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute and is responsible for carrying out specialized strength and conditioning programs established for cardiac rehabilitation patients. Provide education and teach patients the proper exercise techniques.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology OR Exercise Science.
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge in working with patients at risk for or with known cardiopulmonary disease.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Exercise Specialist by The American College of Sports Medicine or its equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Must provide care including the implementation and evaluation of exercise programs for cardiac patients in all phases of cardiac rehabilitation in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Exercise Physiologist, Cardiac Rehab RN and/or Physical Therapist.
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the HVI team to ensure services are consistent with planned surgical interventions and pre and post op care along with all Cardiac Rehab Patients.
  • Assist with insurance authorization, scheduling, and billing to carry out patients’ established plans of care.
  • Completes all required feedback and communication to patient and healthcare team including EMR documentation and reports concerning education, exercise progression, exercise treatment, and monitored physiological and vital responses of the patient.
  • Immediately communicates to appropriate healthcare team members any adverse patient responses to any education, exercise, medications, or treatment.
  • Must be able to set up, monitor, and read EKG/ECG systems used during cardiac rehabilitation and exercise.
  • Must be able to monitor all appropriate patient vital signs during patient exercise and cardiac rehabilitation activities.
  • Maintains exercise equipment with regards to cleaning and inspection.
  • Ensures that patients and their support systems understand education provided as to the patient’s medical condition, plan of care, and established exercise goals.
  • Identifies own learning needs and makes plans to meet these needs.
