About The Position

The Exercise Physiologist performs exercise stress treadmill tests and assists with nuclear stress tests and stress echocardiograms under the direct supervision of the Supervising Cardiologist. The role follows established departmental and physician-approved protocols to ensure safe, accurate stress testing. Responsibilities include screening patients for appropriate indications and contraindications, completing baseline assessments, monitoring ECG and vital signs during testing and recovery, and promptly reporting changes in patient condition to the Supervising Cardiologist. The Exercise Physiologist supports the Nuclear Medicine Program with exercise, pharmacologic, and routine cardiac stress tests, and ensures patient safety, accurate documentation, and compliance with clinical standards and policies.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology.
Exercise Physiologist certification (EP-C).
Basic Life Support (BLS).
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) qualification.
Completion of a class in reading, interpreting, and monitoring EKGs.
Understanding of exercise physiology, cardiac function, ECG interpretation, hemodynamic responses, stress testing contraindications, and safety protocols.
Ability to perform baseline assessments, obtain vital signs, evaluate ECG tracings, and monitor patient symptoms and physiologic responses throughout testing.
Ability to explain procedures, address patient concerns, and provide clear instructions before, during, and after stress testing.
Ability to operate treadmill systems, ECG monitoring equipment, and stress testing software according to clinical protocols.
Ability to recognize abnormal ECG changes, hemodynamic instability, or patient symptoms and promptly notify the supervising cardiologist.
Ability to follow established protocols, accurately document test results, and maintain safe and proper workflow.

Responsibilities

Perform exercise stress treadmill tests and assist with nuclear stress tests and stress echocardiograms under the direct supervision of the Supervising Cardiologist.
Follow departmental and physician-approved protocols for safe and accurate stress testing.
Support the Nuclear Medicine Program by monitoring nuclear, routine, and pharmacologic stress tests as needed.
Confirm that stress tests are properly ordered and screen patients for appropriate indications and contraindications.
Conduct baseline assessments, including ECG evaluation and blood pressure measurement, and educate patients about the procedure.
Continuously monitor ECG, blood pressure, and patient symptoms throughout testing and recovery according to the supervising cardiologist’s protocol.
Identify abnormal findings or changes in patient condition and promptly notify the Supervising Cardiologist.
Ensure the Supervising Cardiologist is present in the clinic before initiating any stress test.
Accurately document vital signs, ECG responses, patient symptoms, and test outcomes in the clinical workflow.
Ensure patient safety throughout testing and communicate exam completion to the supervising physician for interpretation before patient discharge.
