The Underwriter provides underwriting and marketing profitability support for assigned SPG Transportation – Moving and Storage Programs. The strongest candidates will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience underwriting in the transportation, preferably in the Moving & Storage sector. The role involves receiving and evaluating applicants’ information for risk acceptability and within program parameters for new and/or renewal customers through an understanding of company policies, procedures and standards and proper application to risks. This includes researching outside sources for additional information, calculating premiums and appropriate amounts of coverage, and recommending program changes or enhancements. The underwriter must be cognizant of program and own underwriting authority and referral standards, working within authority and referring to others when needed. They will negotiate terms and conditions with agents and brokers, proactively reach out to brokers to drive submission flow, surface new opportunities, and grow the book with a sales-minded approach, including cross-selling additional lines and account rounding. Proper documentation of exposures, coverages, limits, and pricing on individual risks within prescribed service guidelines and maintaining underwriting files within company program and company requirements is essential. Establishing rapport and developing relationships with agents and brokers, educating them on products and services, and providing a high level of service through the product life cycle are key. The role requires delivering profitable growth with proper pricing and underwriting discipline, and the ability to be self-directed with minimal day-to-day supervision. May be called upon to perform projects or other research to further the Moving and Storage program goals and objectives.
