About The Position

The Underwriter provides underwriting and marketing profitability support for assigned SPG Transportation – Moving and Storage Programs. The strongest candidates will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience underwriting in the transportation, preferably in the Moving & Storage sector. This role requires a self-directed individual with minimal day-to-day supervision, who may be called upon to perform projects or other research to further the Moving and Storage program goals and objectives.

Requirements

  • 5 to 7 years experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience (High School Diploma/GED required)
  • Active Property and Casualty insurance license required, or ability to obtain within [30/60/90] days of hire
  • Multi-line experience including automobile, general liability, property, inland marine and Workers’ Compensation
  • Willing and able to travel 10% of the time
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree (4-year degree)
  • Up to 25% travel

Responsibilities

  • Receive and evaluate applicants’ information for risk acceptability and within program parameters for new and/or renewal customers through an understanding of company policies, procedures and standards and proper application to risks
  • Research outside sources for additional and supporting information
  • Calculate premiums and appropriate amounts of coverage – recommend program changes or enhancements based on our products and services
  • Be cognizant of program and own underwriting authority and referral standards and work within authority and refer to others when needed or outside own authority
  • Negotiate terms and conditions with agents and brokers on submitted accounts
  • Proactively reach out to brokers to drive submission flow, surface new opportunities, and grow the book
  • Maintain a sales minded approach to broker engagement, including cross sell of additional lines and account rounding where it fits
  • Properly document the exposures, coverages, limits and pricing on individual risks with the prescribed service guidelines and maintain underwriting files within company program and company requirements
  • Establish rapport and develop relationships with agents and brokers; educate them on our products and services
  • Provide a high level of service through the product life cycle from submission to quote to post bind activities including endorsement requests, loss control evaluation, post-loss analysis, filings and cancellations, as examples
  • Deliver profitable growth with proper pricing and underwriting discipline.
