About The Position

The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles (LA Y) is the Center for Community Well-Being in Los Angeles, dedicated to strengthening communities by providing equitable programs and services. The LA Y focuses on combating food insecurity, promoting educational equity, fostering youth sports participation, offering safe spaces for children and teens, and supporting healthy lifestyles. Their health and wellness initiatives include medical and mental health resources to ensure access to basic health needs. The mission is to provide services and resources that contribute to community well-being. The LA Y operates 29 Centers and over 200 program sites across LA County.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in human services, social services, business, or equivalent.
  • Ten or more years of executive management experience in multi-site operations, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency.
  • Proven experience securing large-scale capital development donations for multi-year building projects or facility renovations.
  • Proven track record of directly building, monitoring, and scaling operational budgets or revenue portfolios of $8 million or more.
  • Proven track record of managing, stewarding, and developing a fundraising portfolio of $1 million or more.
  • Experience in management and development of volunteer involvement.
  • Ability to recruit top community leaders.
  • Ability to direct total operations through volunteer development, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of Center budget, marketing and public relations, and program development.
  • Physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the total operation of a YMCA Center, including membership, marketing, programs, facilities, volunteer and staff development, financial development, community relations and collaborations with community agencies.
  • Aligns the work of staff and volunteers to the Center and Association’s Center for Community Well-Being strategy framework.
  • Establishes and implements an annual operating plan, including goals, timelines, and expected results, in collaboration with staff, volunteers, and metropolitan management.
  • Effectively operates the facility and all program activities, managing the facility daily and ensuring smooth operation of activities and programs.
  • Establishes appropriate management tracking methods to ensure effective performance in all key areas.
  • Identifies and corrects areas where the Center is under-performing, organizing task forces as necessary.
  • Represents and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.
  • Develops, maintains, and models collaborative relationships with community agencies in the service delivery area.
  • Directs the financial development activities of the Center and achieves fund-raising goals.
  • Develops and supports a year-round fund-raising program including annual current support campaign, donor acquisition, donor stewardship, special events, planned giving, and capital gifts.
  • Supports and engages in a structured major donor cultivation strategy to secure a minimum number of major gifts annually for operating, capital, and endowment needs.
  • Develops and supports a long-range capital development plan, including needs and sources of funds, to maintain facilities in excellent condition.
  • Builds the Center endowment by increasing the number of members making irrevocable gift commitments.
  • Oversees the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of staff.
  • Recruits and hires staff using screening tools and panel interviews.
  • Ensures staff members have development plans and allocated funding for training.
  • Identifies career candidates and implements active plans to support their development and advancement.
  • Develops, manages, and monitors the Center operating budget, ensuring budget targets are met or exceeded.
  • Directs Center strategic planning efforts and develops the annual operating plan.
  • Develops and controls long and short-term budgets to support the strategic plan.
  • Ensures adequate cash balances and net assets to fund reserves and maintain fixed assets.
  • Develops and directs high-quality relationship-based member engagement strategies.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Serves as staff officer to the Center Board of Managers and ensures a satisfying Board experience.
  • Leads Board development efforts to build capacity for achieving strategic goals.
  • Ensures each committee has appropriate staff leadership, benchmarks, and charts of work aligned with the strategic plan.
  • Enables the board to participate in strategic plan implementation by providing progress monitoring information.
  • Facilitates ongoing evaluation of the Board's effectiveness and performance.
  • Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs supporting the Y mission, goals, and strategies.
  • Ensures the safety and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Directs Center marketing and communication efforts to effectively communicate benefits to the community.
  • Serves as a member of Y management and supports overall YMCA objectives.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Upholds YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management.
