About The Position

The Executive Director of Teaching and Learning works under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer to coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of teaching and learning strategies across the Department of Education. This leadership position will play a critical role in shaping education policies, curricula, instructional practices, and systemic improvements across K-12 education in South Carolina to ensure high-quality educational outcomes for all students. This position is located in the Office of Career Readiness.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree and relevant program management experience.
  • Experience in district administration is required.
  • Commitment to continually building on existing knowledge and skills to be current on the latest research and innovations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with various constituencies and effectively present complex issues to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to lead and empower staff to reach personal and statewide goals in solving problems and identifying unique solutions.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment across multiple teams and initiatives.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree in Education, Education Leadership, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in educational leadership, curriculum development, and teacher professional development.
  • Strong understanding of educational policies, instructional strategies, and learning theories.
  • Experience building and managing cross-functional teams to implement education initiatives from inception through completion, ensuring they meet objectives and improve learning outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic design and execution of a long-range educational plan with a focus on enhancing student learning outcomes.
  • Ensure cohesive implementation of this plan across the Division of College, Career, and Military Readiness, targeting improvements in programs and processes in line with SC Department of Education (SCDE) priorities.
  • Drive cross-divisional initiatives that support the seamless delivery of SCDE-wide services, establishing strategic partnerships with office directors and fostering a collaborative approach to program enhancement.
  • Oversee system improvement projects by directing staff to utilize rigorous research methodologies to assess the effectiveness of educational policies and programs.
  • Synthesize findings into actionable recommendations for elevating student achievement.
  • Enhance data transparency across student, district, and financial reporting.
  • Support the advancement of data modeling and reporting systems to provide clear insights into educational trends and to inform decision-making.
  • Build and maintain robust partnerships with key educational stakeholders—including school districts, educators, parents, community groups, higher education institutions, and other state agencies—to consolidate resources and expertise in pursuit of academic excellence.
  • Position yourself as an educational thought leader, particularly in instructional strategies and learning outcomes.
  • Develop and deliver insightful presentations that inform and influence policymakers, educators, and the general public.
  • Promote an organizational culture within the Division of College, Career, and Military Readiness dedicated to continuous improvement.
  • Actively seek out and propose enhancements to processes and technologies, ensuring alignment with divisional goals and educational best practices.
  • Cultivate a dynamic and scholarly work environment that attracts, retains, and develops top-tier staff.
  • Emphasize the importance of forward-thinking research, innovative pedagogy, effective teamwork, and lifelong learning among all team members.
