About The Position

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is seeking an Executive Director of Maintenance and Operations to lead a division of approximately 150 employees. This role reports to the Head of Operations and is responsible for overseeing facilities, maintenance, environmental health, and emergency response. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. / B.S) from an accredited college or university
  • Five (5) years of director-level experience in a large facilities management or other property management setting with multiple sites
  • Two (2) years of executive-level management experience
  • Strategic leadership and management experience
  • Experience in facilities construction, trades, and maintenance in a large school setting
  • Effectively manage personnel and teams
  • Proven ability to provide leadership and organization where none exists
  • A strong record of driving organizational change and initiating key innovations
  • Strong analytic and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure where none exists
  • Experience developing and implementing talent management systems or continuous improvement initiatives
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple functions and roles within a complex organization
  • A proven record of effectively planning, organizing and using resources to take action and achieve goals
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with senior level district staff and colleagues
  • Experience and success with effective written and verbal communication, facilitation and presentations to large groups and a variety of audiences (e.g., staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings, memos)
  • Ability to define and implement effective HR business practices
  • Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Responsibilities

  • Articulate a compelling vision of an inclusive and diverse workforce that values all employees.
  • Outline clear, measurable objectives that align maintenance and operations with Local Control Accountability Program goals on a three-year interregnum.
  • Create or supervise the creation of operational protocols and policies that impact services to staff and students.
  • Develop a culture of continuous improvement, excellent customer service, and high standards.
  • Oversee the rollout of a new Work Order Management System.
  • Set a clear, definable standard of excellence for facilities staff and develop a positive rapport with the broader SFUSD community.
  • Develop foundational building blocks for the facilities department including Standard Operating Procedures, professional development benchmarks, and Key Performance Indicators.
  • Prepare staffing reports, models and budgets for all reporting departments.
  • Prepare and present presentations before various public and community groups, the Board of Education.
  • Oversight and direction of: Buildings and Grounds Department; Environmental Health; Fire, Life Safety; Security; Emergency Response and Preparedness; Facilities, Design and Construction.
  • Implement a strong talent management strategy from entry to exit for a team of 150.
  • Develop policies and protocols to improve efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance and operations delivery between departments.
  • Collaborate with a wide array of internal and external partners.
  • Work closely with the Bond Department to plan capital improvements and ensure successful project handoff.
  • Lead large, complex contracts with service and supply providers.
  • Provide information and maintain positive working relationships with labor partners.
  • Deliver professional service with a personal approach to school sites and students. Regularly visit and meet with stakeholders to resolve issues and improve conditions.
