About The Position

The Executive Director of Heart and Vascular Services provides overall leadership, direction, and management for the cardiology and cardiac surgery programs. This role involves planning, directing, and coordinating initiatives related to Quality, Business Development, Finance, and Resources, with advisory support from the Heart and Vascular Leadership Council and operational support from the Duke Heart Network. The Executive Director is responsible for creating business plans, implementing strategies to enhance market share, and providing administrative management for assigned clinical areas. This includes leading the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and policies, ensuring clinical and operational effectiveness, and maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements. The role also involves preparing reports, participating in various leadership meetings, developing budgetary recommendations, and overseeing performance improvement and quality initiatives within the Heart and Vascular service line.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Director within Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, or CV Service Line Administration in a tertiary setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operations, finance, and service line expansion.
  • Proven experience building clinical teams committed to a high-reliability organization.
  • MHA, MBA, or related Master’s degree required.

Responsibilities

  • Create business plans in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Implement business strategies to enhance market share.
  • Provide effective administrative management for assigned clinical areas on a 24-hour basis by planning, implementing, and coordinating patient care.
  • Lead the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and related policies and procedures.
  • Ensure clinical and operational effectiveness across all aspects of cardiac, vascular, and cardiac surgical care, while maintaining compliance with all regulatory requirements and guidelines.
  • Provide all pertinent reports and approvals to the Leadership Council.
  • Assure the development and implementation of outcomes management and performance targets using a Balanced Scorecard.
  • Prepare an Annual Business and Clinical Plan for review and approval.
  • Participate in bi-weekly meetings with Nursing Leadership.
  • Assist in maintaining competency standards for nursing staff.
  • Participate in bi-weekly meetings with the Chief of Cardiac Surgery.
  • Ensure adequate staffing, facilities, and coordination of purchasing in collaboration with the Chief of Supply Chain Management.
  • Participate in bi-weekly meetings with the Chief of Cardiology.
  • Participate in monthly meetings with Medical Directors.
  • Ensure smooth operations, including scheduling and staff education.
  • Participate in monthly meetings with the Chief Physician Relations Officer and management team members within the Chesapeake Regional Medical Group.
  • Actively participate in the recruitment and selection of key physicians and paraprofessionals.
  • Participate in monthly meetings with the Chief of Human Resources.
  • Direct and coordinate work; select and hire staff; and manage personnel in accordance with CRH Human Resources policies, procedures, and the organization’s Code of Conduct.
  • Participate in monthly meetings with the Chief Medical Officer.
  • Prepare necessary information related to the Value Analysis Committee.
  • Report any matters regarding Peer Review.
  • Foster alignment with the Medical Staff, Quality Department, and Risk Management.
  • Develop budgetary recommendations (capital and operating) in collaboration with the CEO, Leadership Council, and Chief Operating Officer/Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Ensure service line performance aligns with Peake of Care high-reliability principles, utilizing national registries to identify focus areas and measure improvement.
  • Lead and support Heart and Vascular committees and group meetings (excluding Peer Review and related Medical Staff activities).
