Executive Director, Extended Studies
About The Position
Reporting to the Associate Provost for Academic Planning, the Executive Director of Extended Studies provides visionary, entrepreneurial, and operational leadership for a significant $88M portfolio of revenue-generating credit and non-credit academic programs serving pre-college, undergraduate, graduate, and professional learners. The Executive Director will shape and implement a comprehensive strategy to expand access, drive sustainable growth, and position Extended Studies as a catalyst for innovation and impact. By cultivating strategic partnerships and championing entrepreneurial thinking, the Executive Director plays a central role in advancing institutional priorities by extending the University of Maryland’s reach locally, nationally, and globally.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or University.
- Twelve (12) years of professional experience, including at least six (6) years supervising or managing professional staff.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire stakeholders at all levels.
- Ability to make sound decisions, solve complex problems, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of relevant industry regulations and best practices.

- Demonstrated record of success in program development, strategic growth, enrollment expansion, revenue generation, budget oversight, and leadership of complex cross-functional teams.
- Advanced degree in education, public administration, business administration, higher education, or a related field.
- Leadership experience in professional and continuing education, online education, workforce development, or related areas within higher education.
- Knowledge of higher education strategy, professional and continuing education markets, workforce trends, and the needs of adult and nontraditional learners.
- Demonstrated financial and operational acumen, including budgeting, performance management, resource allocation, and organizational planning.
- Ability to think strategically, articulate a compelling vision, build productive partnerships, and lead organizational change.
- Experience within a large public research university.
- Familiarity with University of Maryland systems, policies, governance, and institutional structure.
- Record of innovation in lifelong learning, academic strategy, or entrepreneurial educational initiatives.
