About The Position

The Executive Director, Business Capabilities and Excellence (BCE) is a global executive leadership role serving as Head of Business Capabilities and Excellence within Worldwide Patient Safety (WWPS) and as a member of the Patient Safety Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This role also serves as Chief of Staff to the Head of Worldwide Patient Safety, playing a critical integrator role across strategy, execution, and organizational effectiveness. BCE is a staff and enabling function that ensures the Patient Safety organization can meet its regulatory and scientific obligations today while intentionally building the capabilities required for the future. In an increasingly complex healthcare, pharmacovigilance, and regulatory landscape, this role leads the evolution of how Patient Safety operates—across people, process, data, and digital. The Executive Director is accountable for setting the vision and strategic priorities for BCE and for translating Patient Safety strategy into measurable outcomes, sustained performance, and enterprise impact. The role leads a diverse, global organization spanning Strategy and Safety Evolution; Business Operations and Scientific Excellence; Patient Safety Project Management Office (PMO); Integration; Change, Communications and Engagement; and Patient Safety Publications. The incumbent ensures the organization is effectively structured, resourced, and continuously evolving to accelerate organizational effectiveness, transformation, and value realization.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience within the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, or regulated healthcare industry.
  • Minimum of 8–10 years of senior leadership experience with demonstrated success in strategy development, execution, and large scale organizational transformation.
  • Proven experience leading or enabling enterprise level transformation across people, process, data, and digital capabilities.
  • Experience developing and executing strategy for a large, global function operating in a complex, matrixed environment.
  • Strong understanding of pharmacovigilance and patient safety processes, regulatory requirements, and inspection environments is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively at the executive and C suite interface, influencing without direct authority.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex topics clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and cross functional collaboration skills across global organizations.
  • Experience partnering with IT and digital teams on system design, deployment, and adoption.
  • Strategic, innovative, and pragmatic mindset, with sound judgment and the ability to navigate ambiguity and change.
  • Ability to lead in fast paced, evolving environments and anticipate future organizational and capability needs.
  • Proficiency with standard business tools (e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, MS Project).

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of Patient Safety mission, vision, and strategic priorities to improve patient safety outcomes globally.
  • Serve as a trusted strategic advisor and Chief of Staff to the Head of Worldwide Patient Safety, enabling effective operation, decision making, and execution of the PS Senior Leadership Team.
  • Shape and drive Patient Safety organizational evolution, including operating model design, people and culture strategy, and capability modernization across data, digital, and analytics.
  • Govern prioritization of Patient Safety investments and initiatives, ensuring resources are allocated to the highest value opportunities across transformation, process optimization, and digital enablement.
  • Own and manage the Patient Safety budget, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and delivery against financial commitments.
  • Lead and develop a high performing, global BCE leadership team; accountable for strategy, planning, capability building, digital enablement, business operations, and future focused skill development.
  • Provide enterprise grade change management, communications, and engagement leadership in support of Patient Safety strategy and transformation; sponsor Patient Safety engagement networks.
  • Build strong, trusted partnerships with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., IT, HR, GBDS, Medical Affairs, Regulatory, enterprise transformation teams) to advance Patient Safety objectives and ensure adoption of enterprise capabilities.
  • Define, mature, and measure the effectiveness of Patient Safety business capabilities, ensuring scalability, sustainability, and value realization.
  • Oversee identification, evaluation, experimentation, and scaling of innovation, automation, and process redesign opportunities based on demonstrated business impact.
  • Ensure Patient Safety readiness to support Digital Health initiatives and proactively shape opportunities where digital innovation can enhance patient safety and informed treatment decisions.
  • Lead the Patient Safety Project Management Office, ensuring disciplined portfolio planning, prioritization, execution, measurement, and transparent communication of initiatives.
  • Accountable for Patient Safety publications and external scientific communications strategy, ensuring high quality engagement with regulators and the broader pharmacovigilance community.
  • Represent Bristol Myers Squibb Patient Safety through thought leadership and participation in external consortia, forums, and conferences.
