The Exceptional Child Teacher is responsible for maintaining an orderly learning environment and keeping the Principal and Special Education Coordinator informed of program activities. Key duties include assisting in student referrals, diagnosis, evaluation, and admission into special education programs. The teacher determines specific learning problems and social adjustment difficulties, initiating appropriate educational programs in compliance with regulations. This role involves compiling case history data, collaborating with staff and parents to develop and evaluate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and providing individualized instruction. The teacher schedules classes, devises innovative instructional techniques, and provides instruction in life goal domains. If applicable, the teacher coordinates community-based instruction and vocational training. Additional responsibilities include sharing school duties, supervising pupils in out-of-classroom activities, observing the chain of command, supervising instructional assistants or parent volunteers, attending various meetings, participating in school-based decision making, and supporting school-wide student activities. The teacher is expected to maintain professional standards and prompt attendance, performing other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
