About The Position

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) investigates deaths occurring in New York City under specific circumstances, including criminal violence, accidents, suicides, sudden deaths in apparent health, unattended deaths, deaths in correctional facilities, and any suspicious or unusual manner. The OCME operates under core values of CARES: Commitment, Accountability, Resilience, Excellence, and Service. This role involves administrative direction with latitude for independent initiative and decision-making, focusing on organizing workflow, managing assignments, communicating information, preparing performance evaluations, training and mentoring staff, and supervising activities of Evidence & Property Control Specialist I (EPCS I) personnel. The position also requires prior experience assisting Medical Examiners (MEs) in the autopsy suite, operating vehicles for evidence and property control duties, inspecting vehicles to ensure evidence removal, and using computer terminals for case disposition information. Selected candidates must be able to drive agency vehicles, provide a DNA sample, and may be required to be available 24 hours during emergencies as an essential position. Work authorization in the United States is required, and OCME does not sponsor international employees for visa applications.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
  • Two years of full-time, satisfactory experience in the areas of security, law enforcement and/or active military duty; OR Successful completion of 60 college semester credits at an accredited college or university with at least a 2.0 cumulative index grade point average.
  • At the time of appointment, must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York.
  • At the time of appointment, must meet the qualifications for Special Patrolman status.
  • To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, candidates must have, in addition to the minimum qualification requirements, at least one year of experience in Assignment Level I or in a supervisory capacity.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience assisting MEs in the autopsy suite by collecting, receiving and inventorying property obtained during autopsy.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes workflow and is responsible for EPCS I assignments and work performance.
  • Communicates information to staff and other OCME staff.
  • Prepares performance evaluations for staff and submits them to management for review.
  • Trains and mentors assigned staff.
  • Supervises activities of EPCS Is and initiates progressive discipline as necessary.
  • Operates vehicles in the performance of evidence and property control duties to ensure vehicle safety.
  • Inspects vehicles to ensure the removal of all evidence that is retrieved from NYPD or other law enforcement agencies.
  • Operates computer terminal to input and retrieve information to ascertain the disposition of cases.
  • Perform all duties under Assignment Level I, when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.
