About The Position

Under general supervision, receives, stores and releases property seized as evidence and/or lost or stolen property; researches cases to determine final disposition and confirms status with detectives.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of modern office methods, procedures and equipment.
  • Skill in performing a variety of clerical duties.
  • Skill in applying established storage procedures for receiving, documenting, and releasing items.
  • Skill to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communications with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
  • Ability to obtain knowledge of laws and procedures related to evidence and chain of custody.
  • Ability to obtain knowledge of warehousing/storeroom storage procedures
  • Ability to keep accurate detailed records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other agencies, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to deal effectively with individuals who may be distraught or highly emotional.
  • Ability to input information into a records management system, mainframe and other personal computer systems and to access and retrieve information.
  • Ability to understand and apply policies, procedures and guidelines relating to work performed; extract and evaluate information and determine subsequent actions.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make fine discriminations in sound.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including, but not limited to carrying, seeing, squatting, and writing.
  • Ability to operate a motorized vehicle.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including, but not limited to dolly, cart, ladder, and computer.
  • Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • High school education.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Operator's License, Class C.
  • Criminal Background Check.
  • CJIS Background Check.
  • Motor vehicle review.
  • Drug/alcohol testing.
  • Physical.
  • Polygraph.

  • Some college preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and process property and evidence accurately, recording the chain of custody for Court purposes and maintaining documents in accordance with laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Research disposition of cases and dispose of property in accordance with laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Initiate property release documents with detectives and officers; release property including drugs released to outside lab for analysis in accordance with City ordinances, municipal, county and state statutes and departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Testify in court concerning evidence "chain of custody" and Property Room operating procedures.
  • Answer telephone and aid departmental personnel and public.
