About The Position

Provides routine non-acute physical care for the patient, as well as, educational groups based on needs identified in the Master Treatment Plan. This position follows the program schedule with minimal supervision, ensuring patient compliance with program rules and guidelines. The role requires courteous and professional interactions with patients, family members, and significant others, and accurate completion of patient procedures within hospital policy timeframes. Required documentation must be clear, concise, and demonstrate an understanding of patient and unit goals. The position involves attending scheduled hospital inservices, completing staff education, and seeking opportunities for professional growth. Good hand-washing techniques and Universal Precautions are essential. Supervisors must be alerted to risk management and quality concerns. Appropriate dress is required. The role demands flexibility and positivity in accepting responsibility for patients’ leisure time and maintenance of a therapeutic milieu, with creativity in planning patients’ free time and active involvement in all aspects of the patient program. Communication with the RN is crucial for reporting and direction, including observations and pertinent changes in patient conditions. Consistency and positivity in interactions, acceptance of criticism, and maintaining safe boundaries are important. The role includes serving as a preceptor to new employees and role-modeling positive images. Facilitating activity-focused program groups, ensuring necessary materials are available, and starting/ending groups on time are key duties. Incorporating service-specific knowledge (child, adolescent, sexually reactive children, sex offender, or dual diagnosis/chemical dependency) into daily activities is required, including utilizing developmental and program-specific knowledge, understanding mental health and program-specific issues, prioritizing patient needs, and demonstrating understanding of group process and disease concepts. Maintaining up-to-date CPR certification, accepting additional responsibilities, and adhering to all safety policies, safe work practices, and hospital policies and procedures are also essential. All accidents must be reported immediately.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must demonstrate competence in gathering designated admission information, Recreational Therapy information and explaining the Patient Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Must demonstrate basic knowledge of emotional and mental health and disease concepts including the disease of addiction.
  • Must have clear communication / interaction skills and demonstrate competency in facilitating skills groups.
  • Maintains up to date CPR certification.

  • Preferred experience in a mental health field with demonstrable competence in required knowledge and responsibilities.

  • Attends scheduled hospital inservices and completes staff education attendance record. Reads and initials articles that are posted on unit. Seeks opportunities for education and professional growth.
  • Practices good hand-washing techniques, follows Universal Precautions.
  • Alerts supervisors to risk management and quality concerns.
  • Dresses appropriately to position.
  • Flexible and positive in accepting responsibility for patients leisure time and maintenance, therapeutic milieu. Shows creativity in planning patients’ free time. Is involved and physically active in all aspects of patients program.
  • Checks with RN prior to and at end of shift for report and direction. Communicates observations clearly and alerts RN to pertinent and/or high risk changes in patient conditions.
  • Displays consistency and is positive in interactions with others. Accepts criticism and suggestions. Maintains safe boundaries with patients and co-workers, uses self disclosure conservatively.
  • Willingly serves as preceptor to new employees and role-models positive images.
  • Facilitate activity focused program groups as assigned. Has necessary materials available. Groups begin and end on time. Pertinent information is clearly communicated to the unit RN. Demonstrates and teaches good sportsmanship.
