About The Position

Executive Council works to ensure effective strategic planning and coordinated policy development and communications across government, engages Albertans and the broader global community, and promotes a vibrant and innovative public service. In addition to policy, protocol, communications and Cabinet functions, Executive Council includes Communications and Public Engagement (CPE). CPE is the Government of Alberta's full-service communications, public relations and marketing department. Its mandate is to enhance communications between Albertans and the Government of Alberta. CPE’s expert staff provide specialized services across the spectrum of communications including writing, social media, media relations, event coordination, issues management, crisis communications, digital communications, advertising, marketing, graphic design, public engagement and translation services. The department staffs the communications branches in all ministries of government, and provides centralized research, engagement, advertising and media services to government. Are you an experienced event planning professional who thrives in fast-paced environments and enjoys working behind the scenes to deliver impactful, high-profile events? Communications and Public Engagement is seeking an Events Specialist to lead the planning and execution of strategic government events that support the Premier, ministers, senior executives, and ministries across Alberta. This is a unique opportunity to work on announcements and events that receive provincial and national attention while providing trusted advice, managing complex logistics, and ensuring every event is delivered with professionalism and excellence. The role offers meaningful work, significant responsibility, and the chance to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders across government.

Requirements

  • University graduation and/or Diploma in a communications, public relations, or related discipline plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.
  • Experience planning and delivering complex events from initiation through execution.
  • Strong project management experience.
  • Experience coordinating events in a variety of venues and environments.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines in a fast-paced setting.
  • Strong judgment, problem-solving, and issue management skills.
  • Experience working with senior leaders, executives, or diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Must have a valid driver's licence and able to travel throughout the province.
  • Must be able to lift heavy materials for the event; such as the traveling event case, podium sign kit, flags and assist during set-up as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting media events, public announcements, or news conferences.
  • Experience collaborating with audio-visual teams, production companies, or event vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement event strategies for news conferences, media availabilities, technical briefings, photo opportunities, and other outreach initiatives.
  • Provide strategic advice and consultation to ministries and internal stakeholders.
  • Anticipate issues and identify solutions to support successful event delivery.
  • Lead all aspects of event planning, including timelines, resource requirements, venue coordination, technical needs, staging, and production logistics.
  • Serve as an on-site resource for media logistical inquiries
  • Work closely with media relations teams and communications staff to address evolving event requirements
  • Prepare event plans, briefing materials, agendas, checklists, status reports, and post-event summaries.
