About The Position

Position Summary: Primary responsibilities include assisting team members with overall operations of the shelter facility and responsible for the direct care, behavior management, and supervision to shelter residents, ages 5-17. This includes monitoring personal hygiene, health, medication administration, client intakes and discharges, meal preparation, clean-up and maintenance, assistance with the planning and facilitation of daily cultural & physical activities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our youth. Work Schedule: M-F 3pm-11pm. May be asked to work holidays and other shifts. Flexibility required.

  • Education/Experience : AA degree in human services, child development, elementary/secondary education or related field is preferred. A minimum of two (2) 3 years’ experience (NOTE: if we change to two years we will need to change in shelter handbook too) working with youth who exhibit varying degrees of difficult behavior in a residential, therapeutic, group or classroom setting preferred.
  • Candidates must be knowledgeable of the American Indian culture, values, and family systems.
  • Must have the ability to work constructively with children and youth who exhibit varying degrees of difficult behaviors.
  • Must be knowledgeable of traditional Indian child-rearing methods, culture, values and family systems.
  • Must be cognizant of and sensitive to the special needs/issues of American Indian children in out-of-home placement.
  • Must demonstrate and promote a chemically healthy lifestyle.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds, such as a vacuum cleaner, mop bucket w/water, and industrial cooking pots and pans.
  • Must have the ability to stand/walk up three (3) flights of stairs repeatedly.
  • Must have the ability to bend/squat/twist/reach constantly when emptying trash, dusting, sweeping floors, mopping floors, vacuuming, and occasionally shoveling snow.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and pass MN DHS background study.
  • Valid Minnesota Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record as outlined in the employee handbook.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care, behavior management, and supervision of shelter residents to ensure health and safety of everyone. This includes monitoring personal hygiene, health, medication administration, behavioral/emotional status and providing conflict resolution/counseling between residents if needed. Personal Hygiene includes brushing teeth, daily bathing/showering, brushing hair, ensure the residents are wearing clean clothes. At bedtime, ensure youth complete hygiene and are wearing clean pajamas. Changing and washing soiled bedding per occurrence.
  • Prepare healthy and nutritious meals and snacks for shelter residents in accordance with the shelter menu and CACFP food program requirements.
  • Ensure that resident homework is completed after school. Connect with the case manager about homework and school needs.
  • Must maintain a sanitary environment by performing light maintenance duties daily throughout the shift. Ensuring all congregate and living spaces; bedrooms, bathrooms, front/living room, dining room are picked up, and kitchen areas cleaned/wiped down after each meal; storing and labeling leftovers, disposing of outdated and unlabeled items, washing and sanitizing the dishes, and vacuuming/sweeping after meal service. To include program van and outdoor play areas are picked up daily and after each use. Ensure that residents clean their room and assist as needed.
  • Help facilitate daily engaging, interactive activities and groups of a recreational, cultural, or educational nature in accordance with the daily/weekly schedule. This may include house meetings, youth enrichment activities, indoor/outdoor activities, onsite and offsite from shelter and support groups.
  • Provide case management support as needed by providing transportation, documentation in appropriate logs and files, complete full and accurate client intakes and discharges. This includes obtaining resident’s evaluation, cleaning the resident’s room, labeling and storing belongings per shelter policy and procedures.
  • Supervise parental visits. Provide emotional support to shelter residents. Provide resources as needed.
  • Must work in conjunction with other Youth Care Workers by enforcing program policies and procedures, provide emotional support to shelter residents and their families and screen crisis referrals.
  • Provide transportation to shelter residents. Staff must ensure the driving log is complete after every transport. After each transport, staff must check the van for all debris and ensure resident belongings are removed. Shelter Van must be thoroughly cleaned 1x a week. This includes disinfecting the van, vacuum, and car wash.
  • Perform telephone coverage, screen referrals, and provide information to residents and community.
  • Attending weekly shelter staff meeting and monthly All-Staff meeting the 1st Wednesday monthly from 10am-12pm. Unless absence if preapproved in advance with your supervisor.
  • Follow the on-call posted schedule. On-Call staff need to be available by phone and prepared to come to the Shelter in Emergency circumstances.
  • Other duties as assigned
