About The Position

The Assistant Teacher supports the lead teacher in daily classroom planning and operations. This includes periods within the day (such as opening and closing the center and during lunch breaks) when the assistant teacher is responsible for supervising and teaching a group of children. The role involves sharing in developing and maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment, designing developmentally appropriate curriculum, gathering materials, setting up activities, and preparing for trips or special classroom events. The Assistant Teacher also shares in developing consistent discipline and guidance, enforcing rules lovingly, observing children's behaviors and needs, and remaining aware of and reporting any situation that might indicate abuse or neglect to the Director. The position requires participation in routine daily tasks for the care of young children, working in all areas of the classroom, record keeping, and communicating respectfully with families to make them feel welcome. Building a positive team approach and supervising work-study students are also part of the responsibilities. The Assistant Teacher communicates regularly with the director.

Requirements

  • Must have a reliable method of transportation to report to work on time.
  • High School Diploma or its equivalent OR one year of experience working with children less than 13 years of age.
  • Exceptional personal qualities and ethics.
  • Ability to remain calm and responsive throughout the day.
  • Ability to see, hear, anticipate and respond to children's needs.
  • OR two years of experience working in childcare and currently enrolled in a ECC Certificate program.

Nice To Haves

  • An associate's degree in early childhood education (or related field) OR a CDA and one-year experience in childcare OR two years of experience working in childcare and currently enrolled in a ECC Certificate program.
