Ethernet NIC System Architecture

Broadcom•San Jose, CA
•$143,800 - $230,000

About The Position

Broadcom’s Data Center Solutions Group (DCSG) develops enterprise and data center storage, PCIe, and Ethernet network connectivity products. This architect will define software and hardware requirements for next-generation Ethernet NICs, working with customers, software development teams, and ASIC design teams to enhance existing products and support new ASIC designs. The role requires a system-level perspective and understanding of customer use cases, deployment models, and the existing software ecosystem. Key technology areas include Ethernet networking, PCIe, virtualization, RDMA, operating-system kernel infrastructure (including Linux, Windows, and VMware ESXi), and ASIC design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics, or a related field, plus 10 or more years of industry work experience; or a master’s degree plus 8 or more years; or a PhD plus 5 or more years.
  • Experience designing or programming networking devices such as NICs, HBAs, switches, or similar devices.
  • ASIC design knowledge or experience, such as RTL (Verilog/SystemVerilog) and micro-architecture.
  • Good communication skills, including writing technical specifications, and the ability to work collaboratively as a team player.
  • Knowledge in at least one of these fields: cloud data center networks, virtual switching (e.g., OVS), RDMA (RoCE or InfiniBand), or storage stacks (virtio-block, NVMe).
  • Experience with OS kernel and user-mode programming for Windows or Linux, with an understanding of memory, process, thread, and I/O management.

Nice To Haves

  • 15 or more years of experience in system, software, or ASIC architecture.
  • Hands-on software coding experience with C/C++, Python, and Linux drivers.
  • Expertise in networking protocols such as TCP/IP, RDMA/RoCE, or InfiniBand.
  • ASIC design experience with Ethernet MAC/PHY, PCIe, DMA, or RDMA offload engines.
  • Experience with DPDK applications and poll-mode drivers.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with enterprise and cloud data center customers.
  • Explore architectural tradeoffs across NIC hardware and software.
  • Help with the ASIC design of new Ethernet NICs.
  • Drive system software architecture requirements.
  • Provide clear verbal and written direction to development teams.
  • Support Broadcom’s participation in standards bodies, including IEEE 802.3, PCI-SIG, and OCP.

Benefits

  • Discretionary annual bonus.
  • Competitive new-hire equity grant and annual equity awards.
