About The Position

The mechanical estimator in addition to your day-to-day estimating responsibilities which include preparing accurate tender prices from the available information such as drawings and specifications. The change order estimator is essential to Modern Niagara’s success because every construction project begins with well‑built, accurate estimates and continue with ensuring full estimating support to the operation team on active projects. By analyzing drawings, visiting the sites, coordinating with the operations team on pricing, and assembling comprehensive cost breakdowns, the estimator ensures the company puts forward proposals that are realistic, aligned with market conditions, and strategically positioned to win.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary diploma in mechanical or construction with at least 3 years of experience in plumbing and sheet metal estimating
  • Works effectively in a team environment
  • Produce detailed estimates, and or proposal development for opportunities.
  • Good understanding of specifications, construction methods, and procedures
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, time management, and multi-tasking to prioritize workload and stay on top of things as project demands increase
  • Self-motivated with a strong willingness and ability to learn and be challenged
  • Ability to calculate mathematical extensions, analyze and understand construction drawings, associated documentation, contracts, cost coding systems, and work breakdown structures
  • Computer skills and knowledge of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Access, Project) and familiarity with a computerized estimating system (Autobid Mechanical and Autobid Sheetmetal) an asset
  • Excellent organizational and decision-making/problem-solving skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in commercial and institutional projects is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Review project drawings, RFIs, and site conditions to identify deviations from the original contract
  • Calculate the precise material, labor, and equipment costs required for the added or deleted work
  • Contact subcontractors & suppliers to ensure getting the quotations on time.
  • Performing quantity takeoffs including entry into estimating software
  • Preparation, final review, and submission of bid documents to ensure all bid requirements are met
  • Assemble all elements of an estimate including labour, material, equipment, and subcontractor pricing
  • Attend and participate in site visits and pre-submission meetings as required
  • Have the ability to establish strong relationships with suppliers and sub-trades to ensure sound and competitive pricing is received.
  • Ability to critically review request for proposals, preliminary designs, estimates, proposals, and both external and internal information to enable best decisions to be made in consultation with management.
