About The Position

MacKay Contracting is seeking an experienced Estimator / Project Manager to pursue, win, and execute heavy civil and mining work across the Western United States. This role is not a conventional desk estimating position; it offers the opportunity to be close to opportunities, clients, and projects, with significant influence on which work is pursued and how it is built. The company, founded in 1986, specializes in major earthworks, roadbuilding, underground infrastructure, concrete, mining infrastructure, environmental construction, and industrial civil work. The ideal candidate will combine strong estimating and project-management experience with the ability to identify opportunities, build relationships, and execute work in the field, backed by the company's equipment, technical capability, and estimating/operational resources.

Requirements

  • Meaningful time spent in heavy civil construction with an understanding of how work is actually built.
  • Background may include earthworks, underground utilities, roadbuilding, site development, concrete, industrial civil construction, mine infrastructure, or similar scopes.
  • Sufficient estimating experience to analyze drawings, quantities, production, equipment, schedule, and risk.
  • Understanding of project execution.
  • Ability to walk a project with a superintendent, work through pricing with a subcontractor, discuss constructability with an engineer, and interact with an owner.
  • Comfortable moving between the office and the field, and between estimating and operations.
  • Ability to make decisions, ask questions, and involve the right people.
  • Interest in having a meaningful hand in the work being pursued and built.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in mining or mine infrastructure.
  • Experience with InEight, AGTEK, Bluebeam, or similar heavy civil estimating and project-management systems.
  • Relationships with owners, engineers, contractors, suppliers, or subcontractors throughout Idaho, Montana, or the broader Western U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and evaluate heavy civil, mining, and infrastructure opportunities throughout the Western U.S., determining where capabilities create an advantage, understanding risks, and deciding which projects to pursue.
  • Develop estimates, quantity takeoffs, pricing, schedules, and bid strategies based on how the work will actually be built, working closely with estimating, operations, and field leadership.
  • Develop relationships with owners, engineers, general contractors, suppliers, and subcontractors throughout the region to build local knowledge and connections.
  • Take projects from pursuit through planning, mobilization, and execution.
  • Manage cost, schedule, contracts, changes, subcontractors, and client communication.
  • Strengthen the network of subcontractors and suppliers, support the development of project teams, and bring practical market knowledge into competitive decisions.
  • Work closely with MacKay senior leadership team, with estimating, operational, equipment, and technical resources of the broader company.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to influence business decisions and project direction.
  • Resources and experience of an established contractor.
  • Opportunities for growth and increased responsibility for high performers.
  • The chance to make a mark on future projects.
