About The Position

MacKay Contracting is seeking an experienced Estimator / Project Manager to pursue, win, and execute heavy civil and mining work across the Western United States. This role offers a unique opportunity to be closely involved with opportunities, clients, and projects, with significant influence on which work is pursued and how it is built. The company, founded in 1986, specializes in major earthworks, roadbuilding, underground infrastructure, concrete, mining infrastructure, environmental construction, and industrial civil work. The ideal candidate will combine strong estimating and project-management experience with the ability to identify opportunities, build relationships, and execute work in the field, supported by the company's resources and capabilities.

Requirements

  • Meaningful experience in heavy civil construction, understanding practical construction methods.
  • Experience in areas such as earthworks, underground utilities, roadbuilding, site development, concrete, industrial civil construction, or mine infrastructure.
  • Sufficient estimating experience to analyze drawings, quantities, production, equipment, schedule, and risk.
  • Understanding of project execution, including the ability to collaborate with superintendents, subcontractors, engineers, and owners.
  • Comfortable transitioning between office and field environments, and between estimating and operations.
  • Ability to make decisions, ask questions, and involve the right people when needed.
  • Interest in having a significant role in the work being pursued and built.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in mining or mine infrastructure.
  • Experience with InEight, AGTEK, Bluebeam, or similar heavy civil estimating and project-management systems.
  • Established relationships with owners, engineers, contractors, suppliers, or subcontractors throughout Idaho, Montana, or the broader Western U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and evaluate heavy civil, mining, and infrastructure opportunities throughout the Western U.S., assessing capabilities, risks, and project viability.
  • Develop estimates, quantity takeoffs, pricing, schedules, and bid strategies based on practical construction methods.
  • Collaborate with estimating, operations, and field leadership to create competitive and sound bid plans.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with owners, engineers, general contractors, suppliers, and subcontractors in the region.
  • Manage projects from pursuit through planning, mobilization, and execution, including cost, schedule, contracts, changes, subcontractors, and client communication.
  • Strengthen the network of subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Support the development of project teams.
  • Bring practical market knowledge into decisions about competition and strategy.
  • Work closely with the MacKay senior leadership team and utilize company resources.
