About The Position

HNTB is seeking an Estimator II to prepare preliminary cost estimates for complex infrastructure projects under general supervision. The role develops accurate cost estimates that build up the estimated cost of a defined scope of work at any stage of project definition. Estimates may be conceptual, definitive, man-hour, or equipment-factored total installed cost estimates. Duties may also include economic cost studies, cash flows, and contingency analyses.

The Estimator II analyzes bid and design documents, performs quantity takeoffs and operational analyses, and develops direct and indirect estimates with guidance using estimating software. The position collaborates with scheduling teams, supports price negotiations, reviews contractual documents and scope changes, and assists with independent cost estimates and reviews of estimates or proposals prepared by third parties.

The position is located in Downers Grove, Illinois. Visa sponsorship is not available. The approximate pay range for Illinois is $91,710.82–$143,445.15; actual compensation depends on qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical work location.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related degree and 3 years of relevant experience; alternatively, 7 years of relevant experience developing cost estimates in lieu of education.

Nice To Haves

• Experience preparing cost estimates on behalf of a general contractor using commercially available estimating software.
• Experience estimating roadway or bridge projects.

Responsibilities

• Analyze bid and design documents and perform detailed quantity takeoffs to support labor, equipment, and material cost development.
• Perform detailed cost estimates using operational analysis, past work experience, and reputable industry publications to assign productivity and develop costs.
• Develop or build direct and indirect estimates in estimating software with guidance.
• Prepare detailed breakdowns of estimate components and elements.
• Revise estimates and report updates to management.
• Provide support in price negotiations.
• Obtain cost information for materials, equipment, and services.
• Perform related cost estimating and budgeting functions.
• Perform conceptual estimating.
• Collaborate with the scheduling team to develop productivity-based cost estimates and align estimates with construction schedules.
• Review contractual documents and contract modifications to determine scope of work, changes in scope, and cost estimates for scope changes.
• Assist in preparing independent cost estimates for submitted change order proposals.
• Support review of third-party estimates and proposals, including consultant estimates and contractor proposals.
