About The Position

This position involves providing direct and indirect instructional support to students with emotional and behavioral disorders in a positive environment. The teacher will employ special educational strategies and techniques to enhance student development in various skill areas, including sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory. Instruction will cover academic subjects using diverse methods to meet individual student needs. The role also includes teaching socially acceptable behavior, modifying the general education curriculum, planning and conducting learning activities, establishing classroom rules, implementing physician-ordered procedures, collaborating with parents and professionals on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), maintaining student records, and preparing reports. The teacher will also provide crisis intervention, assist in data collection for interventions and reports, serve on multidisciplinary teams, and perform Medicaid administrative claims reimbursable activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Florida teaching certificate in Exceptional Student Education (ESE).
  • Knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the ability to implement all requirements.
  • Knowledge of Special Diploma Sunshine State Standards and Access Points/Alternate Assessment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and application of theory into practice for effective instruction and positive behavioral supports for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of crisis prevention techniques; ability to obtain and maintain de-escalation and crisis prevention training provided by the District.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and enforce pertinent regulations, policies, and procedures for the functional area of assignment.
  • Ability to assess levels of student achievement, analyze data, and prescribe actions for improvement.
  • Ability to provide positive behavioral support to students in a group or individual setting.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality customer service in a timely and professional manner.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain individualized education program (IEP) skills training provided by the District.

  • Knowledge of and experience using multiple project management tools and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, Public Records, Sunshine Law, FERPA, and other laws/regulations related to student and employee privacy, public information, and records retention.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.
  • Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
  • Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition to reinforce learning and to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior as determined by the students’ IEPs by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system.
  • Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities and alternative assessment students based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all students.
  • Provide for implementation of physician-ordered procedures and medications.
  • Meet with parents to discuss their child’s progress and to determine priorities for their child’s and their individualized educational needs.
  • Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop IEPs designed to promote students’ education, physical, and social/emotional development.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on children and activities as required by law, District policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Develop plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of students in inclusive classroom settings.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed for students and those in inclusive classrooms.
  • Assist in collection of data for providing appropriate classroom interventions.
  • Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Assist in preparation of data for local, state, and federal reports.
  • Perform Medicaid administrative claims reimbursable activities as directed in accordance with Chapter 3 of the federally approved School District Administrative Claiming (SDAC) Guide.
