Requirements

  • High School or GED required.
  • EMTs – 1 year of current documented field experience or one year current healthcare experience.
  • EMT-P certification.
  • Basic patient assessment skills including primary survey.
  • Basic knowledge of primary interventions.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • High level of compassion, desire to help others, and self-confidence.
  • Basic computer knowledge with demonstrated administrative skills.
  • Constant standing, frequent walking, and bending/stooping.
  • Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to write legibly.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.
  • May require the use of safety equipment, such as HEPA mask, for infection prevention.
  • On call responsibilities as directed.
  • Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with patient care ranging from minor injury and illness to initiating advanced life support measures within the scope of practice under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and MD.
  • Perform specific technical tasks as outlined on the technician’s skills competency check list.
  • Accurately document care provided in patient medical record.
  • Assist with in-hospital patient transports.
  • Cross-train to Ambulance Transport if certification level appropriate and interested.
  • Assist with secretarial duties.
  • Stock patient supplies and assist with inventory.
  • Monitor equipment to ensure working order and cleanliness.
  • Enter work orders for broken equipment.
  • Clean patient rooms and equipment between patients.
  • Perform IV/IO access.
  • Operate mechanical IV Pumps.
  • Operate Defibrillator to include cardioversion and cardiac pacing.
  • Manage non-displaced gastrostomy tube.
  • Perform invasive hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Perform NG/OG placement.
  • Administer ACLS and PALS medications.
  • Administer other medications ordered by MD per our Advanced ED Technician Program policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned under scope of practice of Virginia as a Paramedic.
