About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the attending RN, performs various direct patient care activities and related clerical and non-technical duties necessary in caring for the needs and comforts of patient; assists in the maintenance of a safe environment; functions as a cooperative, active member of the Health Care Team.

Requirements

  • National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) 1 or greater
  • Immunization Certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
  • BLS: Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS certification).
  • American Alliance of Ofthopaedic Executives (AAOE) Casting and Splinting Certificate

Responsibilities

  • Follows patient care standards, work within scope of practice.
  • Maintains clean and safe environment.
  • Assists, anticipate needs of nurses and physicians in the department.
  • Assists in admission, discharge and transfer procedure(s).
  • Updates physician schedule board including all on call specialties.
  • Enters work orders for broken equipment or other needs in department.
  • Helps in the making of beds and stocking of linens, drawers, IV trays; helps with the processing of paperwork.
  • Backs up registration staff (i.e. answers phones, directs patients/visitors who present at the front desk).
  • Initiates patient transfers to higher level of care including preparing paperwork and notifying EMS dispatch for transport.
  • Answers phones in a timely manner; places calls as needed to physicians, hospitals, etc. as requested to facilitate patient care.
  • Performs EKGs on patients to comply with doctors' orders and meet national benchmarks.
  • Performs wound irrigation and dressing to comply with doctors' orders.
  • Enters/checks ER patient charges and makes corrections when necessary.
  • Applies upper/lower extremity cast/splint to patient in order to comply with provider's orders by using accepted casting/splinting practices and techniques.
  • Removal or altering of casts and splints in order to comply with provider's orders by using accepted practices and techniques.
  • Applies orthopedic devices to patient in order to comply with provider's order by ensuring proper fit/placement.
  • Applies pre-fabricated orthotics and orthopedic appliances to patient by ensuring proper fit in order to comply with provider's orders.
  • Provides patient education on crutch walking and splint care.
  • Participates in Event Reporting.
  • Follows Patient Care Standards.
  • Transports patients within the department and to other departments.
  • Assists those patients requiring help with ambulation.
  • Patient rounding including vital signs.
  • Keeps phone list of staff, physicians and other local resources up to date.
  • Answers call bells or uses intercom to determine patient needs.
  • Delivers samples to Lab.
  • Assists patients to dress and undress and tracks patient belongings.
  • Restocks linens and supplies within department.
  • Immediately reports any observed changes in condition or behavior of patients.
  • Documents in the electronic health record all patient care activities in an acceptable medical legal fashion.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in implementing patient safety measures and documenting interventions in the chart in accordance with policies.
  • Seeks educational opportunities to expand skills and competency.
  • Takes direction well from other staff.
