About The Position

Requirements

  • Knowledge of power/drive train system inspections and diagnoses
  • Knowledge of repair procedures of electrical systems, inspections, and diagnoses
  • Knowledge of electronic control systems inspections, diagnosis, repair procedures, and computerized diagnostic analyzer uses and practices
  • Knowledge of hydraulic system inspections
  • Knowledge of diagnosis, repair procedures and operating principles of gasoline and diesel-fueled internal combustion engines
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of scheduled preventive maintenance programs
  • Knowledge of automotive/truck and heavy equipment operating procedures
  • Skill in using computerized diagnostic analyzer equipment to troubleshoot and repair electric, electronic, and mechanical systems
  • Skill in using a wide variety of specialized tools and equipment to service, repair, and maintain the automotive, truck, and heavy construction equipment
  • Skill in preparing accurate repair estimates and establishing the best and most effective course of repair action
  • Skill in using repair service and overhaul manuals printed or computerized
  • Skill in performing quality control inspections
  • Skill in estimating time and material costs of repairs on equipment
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 50lbs
  • Ability to push/pull up to 50lbs
  • Ability to walk/run up to 0.5 miles
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and electronic hydraulic system problems
  • Ability to perform safety and preventive maintenance inspections on a wide variety of automotive and heavy equipment
  • Ability to overhaul, repair, and service a wide variety of automotive and heavy construction equipment
  • Ability to follow and effectively communicate verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to prioritize, schedule, and track repairs and services for a large fleet operation
  • Ability to comprehend and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to work in a prison environment
  • Requires possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Requires a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a “P” endorsement within the first six months from the date of hire.
  • Requires obtaining a Department of Transportation (DOT) Brake Inspector and DOT Commercial Vehicle Inspector Certifications within the first year from the hire date.
  • Must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks.
  • Must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in at least two categories
  • Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS)-Air Conditioning Certification
  • Minimum of Five (5)years of continuous working experience at a Journeyman level as an automotive or heavy equipment mechanic

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the daily progress meetings with staff and inmates in regard to existing vehicle repair status and vehicles waiting to be repaired or PM
  • Determine what is needed for completion (i.e., parts, tools, repair on data on failure)
  • Analyze repair work needed. Set repair priorities and whether or not vendor repairs are needed
  • Conduct vehicle inspections
  • Determine all repair parts, supplies, and accessories needed and inform Equipment Shop Supervisor
  • Maintain complete inventory of all parts, supplies, and tools
  • Ensures accurate data entry into department's automated fleet management program Ron Turley Associates (RTA); This includes but not limited to Work Orders, Paperless Shop, Paperless Inspections, Inventory records, Posting of Parts and Labor to Work Orders
  • Follow agreed PM scheduling as established for the month
  • Assist in the daily training for inmates by using the Automotive Society of Excellence (ASE) Study Guides per the Fleet 100 program
  • Research and encourage vendors to hold training classes.
  • Assist in training all inmates and new staff on all shop equipment and safety procedures
  • Ensure all tools, keys, buildings, and structures under your control are secured and accounted for before leaving for the day
  • Drives on State business
  • Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment
