This Equipment Repair Technician position offers a great opportunity for you to combine your journey level mechanical experience and your excellent diagnostic skills in maintaining the Light/Heavy Equipment Fleet for ADOT and the State of Arizona. This position is part of a series that offers the opportunity for career advancement through our Criteria Based Promotion (CBP) program. Responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining various types of machinery and equipment including automotive, light equipment and/or heavy duty equipment. Performs repairs in accordance with accepted automotive service/repair industry standards and agency policy. Requires extensive travel across the entire state, including frequent overnight stays.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of power/drive train system inspection, diagnosis and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems inspection, diagnosis, and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of electronic control systems inspection, diagnosis, and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of computerized diagnostic analyzer use procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems inspection, diagnosis, and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of operating principles of gasoline and diesel powered internal combustion engines.
  • Knowledge of fleet maintenance shop safety principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of record keeping principles and practices.
  • Skill in repairing and maintaining mechanical, electrical, electronic and automotive/heavy construction equipment.
  • Skill in operating computerized diagnostic analyzer equipment.
  • Skill in estimating time cost of repair maintenance work for a wide variety of automotive/heavy construction equipment.
  • Skill in scheduling/coordinating automotive/heavy construction equipment service and repair to maximize utilization.
  • Skill in repairing, rebuilding, and overhauling mechanical, electrical, electronic, and/or hydraulic systems in a wide variety of automotive/light/heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to interpret repair manuals, service bulletins and recall bulletins.
  • Ability to utilize a PC and PC programs such as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to diagnose issues quickly and accurately, and determine the best course of action to fix them.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently, especially in high-demand environments where equipment downtime needs to be minimized.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and push/pull 90 lbs; pass a physical exam.
  • Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or the ability to obtain a Class B CDL within the sixth month of employment.
  • Certified Licensed Scale Serviceman certification obtained through the Department of Weights and Measures, and Confined Space and Forklift Certification within the ninth month of employment.
  • Must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks.
  • Must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training.
  • All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience diagnosing and repairing a variety of Light or Construction Equipment with a degree or certification from an automotive vocational school or two years of experience diagnosing and repairing a variety of Light or Construction Equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects a variety of vehicles/equipment, to identify repairs and adjustments necessary for safe operation. The position involves diagnosing, repairing, and certifying scales.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance services, including lube and oil change, tire repair and mounting, and minor repairs/adjustments.
  • Interpreting manufacturer specifications.
