About The Position

ATTENTION ALASKA RESIDENTS ONLY! The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Highways and Aviation/M&O is looking for an Equipment Operator, Journey 1/2 in Akutan to help us Keep Alaska Moving! Equipment Operator Journey 1: The incumbent will perform equipment operations commensurate with a journey-level operator. The main focus of this position will be to utilize various types of light duty equipment to perform maintenance activities in support of State of Alaska mission and maintenance of infrastructure. Use of heavy-duty equipment will be in a training capacity. Equipment Operator Journey 2: The incumbent will perform equipment operations commensurate with a journeyman level operator. The main focus of this position will be to utilize various types of heavy equipment to perform maintenance activities. Shift work may be required.

Requirements

Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road including cost and limits.
Knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, or watercraft.
Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
Accurately coordinate one's eyes with one's fingers, wrists, or arms to perform job-related tasks (for example, to move, carry, or manipulate objects).
As a condition of employment, the incumbent shall obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (in accordance with 49 CFR Part 383.23) within 180 days of hire and shall comply with all provisions set forth in the most recent Equipment Operator Flex Letter of Agreement (LOA) (Journey 1).
Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in accordance with 49 CFR Part 383.23, as well as compliance with the most recent Equipment Operator Flex Letter of Agreement (LOA) (Journey 2).
A valid Tanker (N) endorsement is required at the time of appointment or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of hire under a conditional memorandum (Journey 2).
Must successfully complete all pre-employment requirements applicable to CDL and safety-sensitive positions, including a background check and pre-employment drug testing.
Must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test.
Must register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
Equipment Operator Journey 1 Hire approval is conditional in that the proposed appointee successfully obtains a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire and signs an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
Equipment Operator Journey 2 A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire.
A conditional hire approval can only be given for endorsements. This means that the proposed appointee must successfully obtain an N-Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
If using work experience not already documented in your application, also provide the employer’s name, your job title, dates of employment, and whether full-or part-time.

Nice To Haves

Management may also require the incumbent to obtain a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement; however, this is not required at the time of appointment.

Responsibilities

Utilize various types of light duty equipment to perform maintenance activities (Journey 1).
Utilize various types of heavy equipment to perform maintenance activities (Journey 2).
Operate and maintain airport and highways in all conditions, year around.
Plow snow in near “white-out” conditions.
Repair asphalt.
Maintain airfield lighting and signs.
Train for any emergency that may occur.
Travel to other stations, possibly for extended periods, during the summer months to complete projects.
