About The Position

This position will operate various vehicles and heavy equipment for bridge and roadway maintenance, performs minor equipment maintenance, and assists with repairs and cleaning. Leads and coordinates the work of a maintenance crew, including planning tasks, selecting materials, maintaining records, and preparing reports. Also performs manual labor, temporary traffic control, basic carpentry, masonry, painting, and helps install highway signs. Trains crew members in equipment operation and traffic control procedures. Requirements

  • Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire.
  • A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
  • This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position.

  • Must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.

  • Must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.
  • Must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query once the CLP is obtained.
  • Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, must be registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS.

Responsibilities

  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
  • Oversees crews performing maintenance activities.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
  • Trains crew members in equipment operation and traffic control procedures.
