Requirements

  • High school diploma plus additional certifications of about one year.
  • 4-5 years of progressive experience in a transportation municipal operations environment.
  • Forklift Training
  • Working at Heights
  • Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment. In all weather conditions
  • Strong technical knowledge of transportation-related processes, methodologies, Provincial regulations, and construction practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7.
  • Common core and surface miner training for municipal quarry pit operations.
  • Fuel handling safety training.
  • Facility overhead crane training.
  • Chainsaw certification.
  • Welding.
  • A valid Ontario class AZ or DZ driver’s license in good standing.
  • Criminal Records Check.
  • Able to lift 45kg (e.g. tires, brakes, parts).

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred Standard First Aid CPR/AED Level C Training.
  • Preferred Occupational Health and Safety Confined Space Training.
  • Preferred Completion of the TJ Mahoney, Construction & Maintenance Certification accredited by the Ontario Good Roads Association.
  • Preferred Completion of a Heavy Equipment Operator Program.

Responsibilities

  • Operates machinery, tools and equipment required to maintain road infrastructure, including snow and ice management, grading roads, excavating, hauling and spreading materials, operating heavy construction machinery and trucks, and conducting seasonal roadside maintenance.
  • Installs and maintains regulatory, warning and information signs as per the Ontario Traffic Manual.
  • Reports road conditions, damage, vandalism, and other conditions to Supervisors and carries out repairs as directed.
  • Picks up litter and debris within Municipal right-of-way.
  • Repairs guardrails, municipal sidewalks, shoulders, storm sewers.
  • Installs traffic calming (e.g. speed humps).
  • Operates the Street Sweeper.
  • Assists with installing traffic control devices to ensure a safe working environment within the roadway as per the Ontario Traffic Manual.
  • Undertakes legislated road patrols.
  • Undertakes roadside forestry activities.
  • Assist with street light maintenance.
  • Repairs, replaces and/or installs municipal drains, including steel culverts, tiling, catch-basins, and erosion control devices.
  • Assesses type and quantity of material needed for road construction, assists with ordering gravel and other materials, and reports material quantities consumed.
  • Operates and performs chip sealing operations required for maintenance activities and new construction projects.
  • Performs and undertakes road, sidewalk, and other transportation related construction projects, operating a variety of heavy construction equipment.
  • Performs all required mechanical maintenance of heavy construction equipment and vehicles (i.e. oil changes, tire repair, painting, wiring and welding).
  • Performs daily safety inspections of equipment and vehicles and reports any deficiencies.
  • Assists with inventory procurement.
  • Performs safe operations of all heavy construction equipment and vehicles and ensures proper use of chemicals.
  • Operates winter maintenance equipment, including plow trucks, front-end loaders, sidewalk plows, graders, heavy construction equipment as directed.
  • Maintains municipal parking lots and Public Works and Engineering facilities.
  • Assists with Water repairs.
  • Undertakes special projects and performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with corporate objectives.
