About The Position

GovFirst is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Equipment Operator to support roadway maintenance operations in Hampton, VA. This position is responsible for operating a variety of highway maintenance equipment, performing preventive maintenance inspections, supporting roadway maintenance activities, and assisting with emergency response operations as needed.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating and performing basic maintenance on roadway maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to safety, detail, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor environments.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Equivalent experience, training, or military experience may be considered.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required (minimum requirement).
  • Valid DOT Medical Card required.
  • Ability to obtain Flagging Certification within sixty (60) days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Operate light, medium, and heavy-duty highway maintenance equipment, including backhoes, dump trucks, loaders, motor graders, tractors, bush hogs, and similar equipment.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and inspections to ensure equipment remains in safe operating condition.
  • Support roadway maintenance activities including traffic flagging, work zone setup, traffic control operations, brush cutting, ditch maintenance, debris removal, pothole patching, and roadway repairs.
  • Assist with emergency roadway response operations during incidents, weather events, and other emergencies.
  • Conduct heavy manual labor as required, including lifting, carrying, loading, and unloading materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Follow all applicable VDOT, OSHA, company, and industry safety standards and procedures.
  • Read, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, project management, and team members regarding work assignments and project status.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, tools, and work areas in a safe and organized condition.
  • Serve as a member of an Emergency Response Team when directed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisory staff or project management.
