About The Position

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill an Equipment Operator, as a Street Cleaning Dump Truck Driver in the Street Cleaning division. The selected incumbent will be responsible for driving the dump truck during daily sweeping and towing operations. Duties include but are not limited to Maintains and repairs equipment, grounds, parks, playing fields, and other facilities; ensures grounds are safe and meet required standards; preps grounds or fields as needed. Operates machinery and necessary equipment; ensures vehicles receive needed maintenance. Assists with special events, snow/storm debris removal, and unscheduled circumstances. Conducts supply inventory for area of responsibility; manages supplies. Processes routine documents and forms.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• Six months of experience operating equipment related to assignment
• An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
• A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
• Knowledge of commercial vehicles and equipment
• Knowledge of commercial mowing equipment
• Knowledge of chemicals and chemical reactions
• Knowledge of high tension rigging systems and hoisting mechanisms, including winches and grip hoists, as well as their various safe applications
• Knowledge of infrastructures
• Knowledge of small engine repair and maintenance
• Knowledge of storm water maintenance
• Knowledge of various tools and equipment used in the area of assignment
• Knowledge of safety procedures and rules regarding the operation of various equipment and tools
• Knowledge of various plants and fauna for safety reasons
• Skill in ensuring vehicles are in good working order
• Skill in maintaining equipment and machinery
• Skill in reading work orders, blueprints, maps, route lists, etc.
• Skill in closing work orders
• Skill in conducting inventory checks
• Skill in excavating underground structures and pipelines
• Skill in maintaining a safe and clean environment
• Skill in carpentry for building and repairing a variety of structures
• Skill in pulling and parking trailers
• Skill in removing snow when necessary
• Skill in responding to emergency events
• Skill in setting up job sites such as cordoning off areas with cones or signs
• Skill in stocking vehicle with necessary supplies
• Skill in using a radio and phone
• Skill in using chemicals properly
• Skill in using and operating various equipment safely and correctly such as constructions vehicles, vacuums, pressure sprayers, paving equipment, hand grinders, chain saws, woodshop tools, etc.
• Skill in operating vehicles and machines such as light and heavy dump trucks, tandem trucks, bucket trucks, boom trucks, compressor dump trucks, heavy rollers, pay loaders, backhoes, tractors with batwings, etc.
• Skill in operating equipment and tools used in the Equipment Operator classification as well as those listed above
• Ability to problem solve
