About The Position

The purpose of the position is to operate equipment to support City facility maintenance operations which may include, depending on division assigned, road maintenance; sidewalk repairs; tree work and beautification of right of ways; drainage and repair of right of ways, retention ponds, drainage canals, and underground storm system. Employees in this classification perform skilled and semi-skilled work that is distinguished from that of heavy equipment operator by the complexity of the equipment and the expected results. Responsible for regularly and competently operating a variety of motorized equipment in support of various specialized construction, maintenance and repair operations throughout the City. Assists in performing heavy manual work and may serve as a lead worker within a work crew. Flushes drain pipes, cleans drain basins, cleans sewer lines, and jets through pipes. Operates pumps of various sizes. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Requires one year experience in operation of heavy equipment, equipment maintenance or closely related experience.
  • Upon appointment to the position must possess and maintain a minimum of a valid Class "B" Florida Commercial Driver's License, with air brakes and tanker endorsement.
  • Within six (6) months of appointment to the position, must obtain and maintain, a Class "A" Florida Commercial Driver's License, with air brakes and tanker endorsements.
  • Must possess a valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card when CDL license is obtained.
  • Within one (1) year of appointment to the position must possess, and maintain, an FDOT approved intermediate Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification.
  • Traffic Division Specific – IMSA Signs & Markings Level I certification is required.
  • Must possess, and maintain, or be able to obtain within one (1) year of appointment to the position.
  • Stormwater Specific - Must possess and maintain, or be able to obtain within six (6) months of appointment to the position, Class C Storm Water Certification and Erosion Control Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews work orders to determine nature of work including excavation, installing concrete, laying of pipe, repair of roadways, and mowing.
  • Operates equipment including hydraulic excavator, backhoes, front-end loader, asphalt patch truck, and lawn maintenance equipment in support of citywide maintenance and construction activities as based on assigned division.
  • Transports required equipment to the job site; assists in the loading and unloading of materials and equipment transported to the work site.
  • Assists other departments in scheduled and emergency operations and all other requested work within safe operation of the equipment.
  • Consults procedural documentation such as vehicle manuals and maintenance manuals to insure work is performed correctly.
  • Keeps records such as vehicle maintenance and gas receipts to document actions taken.
  • Performs routine minor maintenance of vehicles/equipment; ensures vehicles and equipment are neat, clean and orderly; may be required to perform laboring tasks when not assigned as equipment operator.
  • Copies, transcribes, enters or posts data or information.
  • Provides information, guidance or assistance to people that directly facilitates task accomplishment; may give instructions or assignments to helpers or assistants.
  • Requires some responsibility for achieving minor economies and/or preventing minor losses through the handling of or accounting for materials, supplies or small amounts of money.
  • Uses basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.
  • Responsible for guiding others, requiring a few decisions, affecting the individual and a few co-workers; works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions, but with some variations from the routine.
  • Handles or uses machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
