About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to operate equipment and perform manual work functions associated with various city departments as assigned. This role involves operating equipment and performing semi-skilled and manual work activities involving various city department functions, potentially including street maintenance, traffic control, sanitation, landfill, central garage, or other projects. The Equipment Operator will operate a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools used in department projects and activities, transport, load, and unload refuse, equipment, and other materials, and perform various tasks associated with sanitation operations, including coordinating daily routes and potentially transporting crews. Additionally, the role involves performing manual labor functions, general cleaning and maintenance of machinery, equipment, and tools, utilizing safety equipment, and communicating with supervisors, employees, city departments, and the public. This position also requires maintaining regular and predictable in-person attendance and supervising and leading subordinate employees on their route. A drug test and alcohol screening are required prior to employment and may be required in the future.

Requirements

  • Must have a Class B CDL license to apply.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Supplemented by vocational/technical training in truck driving or equipment operation or supplemented by five (5) months previous experience driving trucks or equipment operation in assigned area; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).
  • Ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.
  • Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.

Responsibilities

  • Operates equipment and performs semi-skilled and manual work activities involving various city department functions; may be assigned to street maintenance, traffic control, sanitation, landfill, central garage, or other projects.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in department projects and activities, which may include a utility truck, sanitation truck, backhoe, end loader, water truck, water pump, tractor, mower, weed eater, bush hog, leaf vacuum, computerized scales, body lift, saw, grinder, vacuum, shovel, rake, broom, mechanical tools, etc.
  • Transports, loads and unloads refuse, equipment, and other materials.
  • Performs various tasks associated with sanitation operations; transports crew of sanitation workers to collect refuse on an assigned route; coordinates daily route of truck.
  • Performs various manual labor functions associated with department projects and activities, which may include mowing/edging grass, spreading grass seed/straw/fertilizer, digging holes/trenches, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, picking up debris/litter, loading garbage into a garbage truck if needed.
  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning building and work areas, etc.; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
  • Utilizes safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, city departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
  • Maintains regular and predictable in-person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson is required.
  • Supervises and leads subordinate employees on their route.
  • Must undergo and successfully complete drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and undergo and successfully complete future drug test and/or alcohol screening pursuant to the City’s Drug and Alcohol policy.
  • Provides assistance or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.
  • Performs related duties as required, necessary, or assigned.
