About The Position

This is a senior-level position. Under general direction from the foreman, Supervisor or Assistant Superintendent, incumbent Operates and maintains heavy equipment. Repairs roads, patches as needed, operates small motorized equipment, flags traffic for work trucks and equipment, performs various duties on heavy equipment, performs rough carpentry work and manual labor when required.

Requirements

  • Eight to Twelve years of experience
  • High School Diploma or GED and/or tech school and/or five years on the job training.
  • Must be able to operate two-wheel and four-wheel drive County owned vehicles in both day/night time conditions and all weather and road conditions
  • Must be able and willing to work long extended hours, weekends, late nights and holidays when necessary.
  • Must be able to squat, bend over at the waist, perform other physical movements necessary to traverse property, in wooded, grassy areas, non-paved roads, construction sites and undeveloped lands.
  • Must be able to climb ladders or crawl in tight spaces.
  • Must be able to regularly stand and walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, use hands to handle or feel objects and talk and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close distance vision and the ability to adjust focus, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Travel by foot across all types of terrain found in Benton County to access areas under construction in all outside weather conditions.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Push/pull occasionally required.
  • May encounter wet conditions, fumes, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, and other hazards when working on projects.
  • Regularly encounter road conditions that cause vehicle vibration.
  • The noise level changes from quiet to very loud depending on the projects.
  • Work may be performed during day/night time conditions.

  • May serve as lead worker to lower-level personnel involved in road construction.
  • Applies herbicides to county right-of-way if required and certified.
  • Will be required to go through Road Department equipment training course.
  • Must be able to obtain at least a class B CDL if needed.
  • On call when needed for emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Follows Benton County Road Department safety rules and regulations.
  • Operates and maintains heavy equipment such as bulldozers, semi-trucks, graders, chip spreaders, oil distributors, asphalt lay-down machines, grade-all, front loaders, backhoe, hydraulic excavator, may serve as lead worker to lower-level personnel involved in road construction.
  • Repairs failures in the roadway, shoulders or bridge decks; repairs or replaces signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
  • Operates small motorized equipment such as chain saws, drills, jack hammers, saws, paving breakers and tampers.
  • Performs as a flag person directing county road traffic.
  • Applies herbicides to county right-of-way if required and certified.
  • Installs or repairs county road signs near high speed and/or heavy traffic.
  • Drives a truck with a snowplow and sand spreader during snow and ice control.
  • Performs rough carpentry work, building and installing forms using lumber and small hand tools, for concrete bridge decks, bridge posts, curbs, wingwalls, and headwalls.
  • Performs various types of welding on fencing, bridge structures and special fabrication. Performs related work as required and assigned by the supervision staff.
  • Read and comprehend engineered drawings for roads and Bridges.
  • Will be required to go through Road Department equipment training course. Must be able to operate all heavy equipment at the road department.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • Must be able to obtain at least a class B CDL if needed.
  • On call when needed for emergency situations.
