About The Position

The Solid Waste Division, part of the Public Works Department, is responsible for weekly curbside collection of household garbage, yard waste, and bulk waste. This role involves skilled operation of various solid waste trucks and equipment, such as rear loader, boom truck, and bandit truck, for collecting and disposing of waste materials on assigned residential routes. The position may also involve serving as a lead worker, overseeing safety and work quality for fellow employees. Work is performed under the supervision of the Solid Waste Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, with a strong emphasis on compliance with safety standards, including OSHA regulations. Service quality is assessed through observation and public satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Understanding the principles and practices of operating and servicing trucks and equipment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of traffic laws and CDL regulations governing equipment operation.
  • In-depth knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions for garbage collection equipment operation.
  • Familiarity with basic computer operations and electronic data input systems, such as Mobile 311.
  • Proficiency and care in equipment operation.
  • Ability to accurately follow oral and written directions.
  • Capability to maintain simple records effectively.
  • Strong ability to work responsibly and cooperatively as part of a team on related routes.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to respond courteously to citizens.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Two years experience working outdoors.
  • A minimum of two years driving CDL class type vehicles.
  • Valid NC Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Subject to random drug testing under Federal DOT Regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Operates trucks along assigned routes to collect limbs, yard waste, curbside trash, debris, and junked furniture or appliances, ensuring proper disposal.
  • Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections, performs routine preventative maintenance, cleans equipment, and ensures proper functionality.
  • Works alongside collection crews to load and clear trash and debris, including roadside cleanups and landfill dumping.
  • Adheres to safety protocols to ensure the well-being of self and coworkers during operations.
  • Utilizes NovoGov devices to record pickup locations, report problem areas, and enhance route efficiency.
  • Answers citizen inquiries regarding Solid Waste Division policies and procedures in a professional manner.
  • Drives CDL-required vehicles and operates specialized equipment, including forklifts, to handle trash carts and other materials.
  • Cleans areas around trash cans, picks up loose trash, and ensures thoroughness in waste collection tasks.
  • Performs related duties as required, showcasing flexibility in handling various tasks.
