About The Position

Skillfully operate medium and heavy construction equipment such as back hoe, grade all, mini excavator, assorted heavy trucks and other equipment. Position is under the direct supervision of Wastewater Collection Supervisor Foreman and/or Crew Leader. Position is part of Wastewater Collection maintenance and repair crew and is expected to assist in aspects other than equipment operation if requested to do so. Due to the nature of the wastewater collection systems, it may be necessary at times to work through normal lunch and break periods if system customers are without service. However, these periods will be allowed either after service is restored or within an acceptable time-frame as determined by job foreman. It may also be required at times to work unscheduled overtime in order to restore service. Position will require employee to take part in a rotating emergency call out schedule and be accountable for responding to and properly handling all after hours calls. Performs other tasks as requested.

Requirements

• High School diploma for G.E.D. is required.
• Experience in the use and operation of heavy vehicles and heavy construction equipment, as they relate to construction and repair of wastewaster collection systems.
• Must be able to perform periodic heavy manual labor under adverse conditions.
• Must have a valid Class “B” State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsement.
• Applicants who posses a valid out of state license must obtain the Florida License within 10 days of employment.
• Applicant shall be required to maintain certifications including but not limited to MOT, Trenching and Shoring and Confined Space.
• Applicants who do not have the above certifications will be required to achieve certification within 1 year of hire.
• Knowledge of occupational safety rules, and practices, as they relate to heavy equipment, and sewage collection repair construction.
• Skill to operate and perform routine maintenance on medium and heavy equipment.
• Ability to both understand and communicate oral and written instruction.
• Ability to both interpret and complete work order forms.
• Ability to perform strenuous work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.
• Skill in the safe operation of medium and heavy equipment as it relates to the installation, repair and maintenance of wastewater collection systems.
• Skill in the safe operation of medium and heavy equipment in and around areas that have other underground utilities such as water and/or gas mains, telephone or T.V. cable etc.
• Skill in the safe operation of large dump trucks while pulling a trailer loaded with equipment.
• Knowledge of City wastewater collection system.
• Knowledge of Area roadways as they relate to weight restrictions, and heavy vehicles and/or equipment.
• Knowledge and skill to operate computers, work order and preventative maintenance software to include Word, Excel, email and internet.
• Knowledge and skill to navigate and maneuver through the City’s web based GIS mapping systems.
• Good hand, foot and eye coordination as they relate to the safe and efficient operation of heavy construction equipment.
• Ability to read and comprehend work orders, equipment/tool manuals, safety manuals, and other printed and/or written material as it relates to the job.
• Ability to understand and comprehend area maps as they relate to location of sewer mains, valves, lift station and manholes.
• Ability to understand and comprehend basic math.
• Read, understand and utilize tape measurer.
• Ability to identify and comprehend colors as they relate to traffic and/or road signs, safety equipment, utility markings, and other utility related materials.
• Ability to hear and understand instructions given in the English language and spoken in a normal tone of voice.
• Hear basic instruction, approaching heavy equipment and/or verbal warnings given by co-workers while working in immediate vicinity of heavy equipment that is in operation of other noisy environment.
• Ability to verbally communicate with co-workers and others in the English language face-to-face and over two-way radio.
• Ability to write up work orders, warehouse material requisitions, and vehicle service forms in a legible and understandable manner.
• Ability to manually use shovel, wrenches, pick, rake, and other related hand tools in the efficient excavation, repair, backfilling, and subsequent area restoration of sewer mains, valves, manholes, and service laterals.
• Ability to set up and operate pneumatic driven jack hammer, gas and/or hydraulic powered portable saws, pumps, and other associated tools that weigh between 25 lbs. and 100 lbs.
• Ability to lift and carry (up to 100 yds.) items weighing up to 75 lbs. Also carry such items over uneven terrain. Load into and unload such items from vehicle. Carry and/or lower into and remove such items from ditches and/or manholes.
• Ability to assist in the loading and unloading of sewer pipe and fittings up to 30" diameter.
• Ability to mix concrete and work in areas with concrete dust.
• Ability to handle and work around liquid degreasers and other solvents.
• Ability to enter and leave excavated work sites by way of steep incline or ladder.
• Ability to lift and carry items which are considered hard to grasp and or hold onto. Hold items weighing up to 20 lbs. for extended periods. Walk over and around cluttered work areas and uneven surfaces. Climb up and down ladders and/or steps. Set up and work from ladders and scaffolding. Work while standing on uneven and/or wet surfaces.
• Ability to work in confined spaces such as small above ground lift station structures, underground or "can" type lift stations, lift station wet wells, lift station valve vaults, sewer manholes and excavated holes/ditches. At times such work may continue for extended periods.
• Ability and willingness to work in confined spaces that have toxic atmospheres while wearing life line connected safety harness.
• Ability to work in and around raw sewage while wearing protective gear.
• Ability to work during night and/or early morning hours or for extended periods when required.
• Ability to work and perform manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions.
• Ability to perform periodic heavy labor as required.
• Ability to maintain a professional attitude while working in close proximity with others in confined spaces and/or under situations of duress.
• Ability to receive instructions and constructive criticism from departmental management.
• Ability to give and understand assorted and various hand signals as they relate to the operation of heavy construction equipment.
• Ability to frequently climb up and down from heavy equipment cab/seat.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment for extended periods while being subjected to the vibrations, heat, fumes and stress associated with such work.

Responsibilities

• Skillfully operate medium and heavy construction equipment such as backhoe, grade-all, mini excavator , assorted heavy trucks and other equipment necessary to construct and/or repair sewer mains, manholes and lift stations.
• Assists as required with general construction and laboring tasks associated with the sewage collection system.
• Operates and maintains equipment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
• Loads and hauls fill, excavated spoil rock, Marl, and other materials to and from job site.
• May be required to act as Crew Leader when necessary.
• Communicates with customers regarding service calls and work progress.
