About The Position

The County of Volusia is seeking an Equipment Operator II for the Road and Bridge Division. This position may report for duty at any Volusia County Road & Bridge location and will be responsible for semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of medium and heavy equipment to complete road maintenance and drainage tasks, performing daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after each use. Note: Must possess a valid Florida CDL Class B at the time of hire and maintain thereafter.

Requirements

  • Completion of the eighth (8th) grade
  • Two (2) years' experience in the operation and routine maintenance of moderately medium-sized construction and automotive equipment.
  • A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of hire and maintain thereafter.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid Florida CDL Class B at the time of hire and maintain thereafter.
  • A pre-employment skills test will be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the operation, routine maintenance, pre- and post-trip inspections of medium and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of the component parts, operating principles, and routine maintenance needs of medium and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation of medium and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and other regulations governing the operation of equipment.
  • Skilled in the operation of moderately complex construction equipment.
  • Skilled in the safe operation of flatbed and dump trucks, tractors, mowing attachments, and the less complex construction equipment.
  • Ability to service various types of medium and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Operates 10-wheel commercial trucks.
  • Operate equipment, such as front-end loader, backhoe, skid steer.
  • May operate a distributor applying oils, asphalt, or tars to highway surfaces.
  • May operate roller in patching county roads.
  • Operates truck carrying fuel, lubricants, and lubrication equipment.
  • Performs routine field lubrication of light, medium, and heavy rolling stock and equipment.
  • May operate a flatbed or dump truck.
  • Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
  • Performs routine service and maintenance of equipment.
  • Participates generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.
  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Performs duties and responsibilities of an Equipment Operator I.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
