About The Position

A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park’s existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to perform heavy, manual labor in the areas of the Highways and Street Division. Successful performance helps ensure safe and efficient Public Works services, as well as a positive public image for the city. This position acts as lead person in performing roadways repairs, Utility cuts, patches potholes, deep base patching. This position is also responsible for operating heavy equipment during asphalt repairs. Field duties require getting all material, personnel, and equipment ready for each daily assignment to include, including manual work of a routine nature as a member of a maintenance asphalt crew that involves heavy physical labor in the areas of the Highways and Streets Division. Repairs and maintains City Highways and Streets. Conducts road inspection and repairs streets deficiencies. Patches potholes and performs other tasks in repairing streets. Repairs and maintains City Street cuts for repairs. Loads and unloads items such as stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, pipe, timber, and heavy mechanical equipment. Assists in semi-skilled work by handling tools, carrying or lifting lumber, mixing or placing cement and asphalt, performing simple repairs, or running errands. Performs a variety of other heavy manual work in connection with the maintenance of streets, roads, and facilities; Assists in the installation of asphalt deep base patching. Collects and disposes of debris, trash, etc. caused by job site. Make street cuts for repairs to City streets and rights-of-way.

Requirements

  • Experience in operating lightweight vehicles, 5yd dump trucks single axle, asphalt patch truck, Backhoe, steal roller, Bobcat, front end loader, able to pull truck and Trailer Combination, and other maintenance-heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the material commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities as related to assigned areas.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to work being conducted.
  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and routine repair of equipment used in the Public Works construction and maintenance field.
  • Skill in performing various manual labor assignments as needed.
  • Ability to place and remove cones, barricades, warning devices, and/or direct traffic at worksites to ensure the safety of the work crew and public.
  • Ability to perform general street maintenance duties.
  • Ability to follow established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform general equipment/tool maintenance duties.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and efficiently carry them out with general Supervision.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving heavy manual labor.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Three (3) years of related experience.
  • Possession of a valid State of Georgia CDL Class (B) Driver’s License; prefer Class (A) or must obtain CDL class (B) within six months of employment.
  • Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.

  • Prefer Class (A) CDL Driver's License.
