The purpose of this classification is to operate heavy trucks and equipment and assist work crews with city construction, maintenance projects and solid waste collection. Duties include driving heavy trucks and operating a variety of equipment, performing pre-trip inspections and routine maintenance, and preparing trucks and equipment for daily assignments. The role may involve overseeing work activities of crews, training new employees, operating heavy trucks and equipment to collect and transport materials, and ensuring loads are secure. Additional tasks may include mowing, cutting concrete and asphalt, tamping dirt, sawing trees, assisting in pipe installation, grading ditches, locating and digging up manholes, removing debris from manholes and catch basins, cleaning pumping stations, unstopping river boxes, and constructing sewer structures. The position also requires preparing production and vehicle maintenance reports, operating a two-way radio, providing assistance to other City crews, and potentially flagging traffic around work sites.
