About The Position

The Equipment Operator I performs skilled equipment operation and general construction and maintenance work for the Pima County Regional Flood Control District (RFCD) using a variety of heavy and small equipment to support the maintenance and repair of RFCD facilities. Work may include equipment operation, site preparation, grading and layout, drainage and flood control maintenance, fence installation, utility-related work, and other maintenance activities. As the Equipment Operator I, you will work as part of a team and may be required to operate equipment and perform maintenance activities in a variety of outdoor environments and conditions and may include metal fabrication and welding to modify, repair, and maintain equipment, structures, and other District assets.

Requirements

• Two years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment/vehicles, which may include street sweepers, water trucks, asphaltic materials distributors, front end loaders, graders/scrapers, bulldozers, backhoes, trenchers, tractors, tractor/semi-trailer combinations and like equipment.
• Valid driver's license is required at the time of application. Valid AZ driver's license is required at time of appointment.
• The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine the applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
• This position requires a valid Arizona commercial driver's license (CDL), Class A, Class B, or Class C with appropriate endorsements is required.
• Positions requiring a CDL are also subject to applicable State of Arizona and federal standards, rules, and regulations on physical requirements including drug and alcohol testing.
• The County requires pre-employment background checks.
• Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
• This position will require a post-job offer physical and/or drug screen.
• This position will require post-job offer proof of immunization(s) or immunization(s) and/or a TB screening.
• Constantly operates and inspects mechanical equipment.
• Constantly positions self to use, inspect, clean or repair tools and machinery.

• Occasionally ascends/descends machinery and equipment to repair/service.
• Must have valid driver license and clean driving record.

Nice To Haves

• Completion of a vocational/technical program from an accredited college or technical school in heavy equipment operations may be substituted for six months of the required experience.
• Minimum four (4) years experience operating heavy equipment, including excavators, backhoes, loaders, skid steers, and other small equipment; including equipment inspections, basic maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Minimum three (3) years experience performing construction measurements and layout, including grades, elevations, calculations, fence installation, and interpreting plans, blueprints, maps, and utility drawings.
• Minimum two (2) years experience working around underground and overhead utilities, including following Arizona 811 procedures and applicable laws and safely working around existing utilities.
• Minimum three (3) years experience in metal fabrication and welding, including modifying, repairing, and maintaining metal components, and structures.
• Minimum two (2) years experience applying job site safety practices, including identifying hazards, taking corrective action, following OSHA requirements, and safely operating equipment and vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Operates a variety of equipment to rough construction specifications used in public works construction and maintenance such as roads, parks, drainage ways, and wastewater systems;
• Operates a variety of equipment such as street sweepers, water trucks, asphaltic materials distributors, front end loaders, graders, bulldozers, backhoes, boom trucks, tree spades, trenchers, tankers, semi tractors, belly dumps, scrapers, snow removal equipment, cranes, drag lines, rollers, striping equipment, pavement marking equipment and various other equipment;
• Hauls materials using semi-tractors, trailers, and various trucks;
• Loads, secures, and transports equipment on transport trailers;
• Blade-mixes and lays bituminous road mix or asphaltic concrete;
• Performs minor equipment repairs and servicing;
• Participates in a variety of manual labor tasks.
