About The Position

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of skilled, specialized work involved in the City Cemetery. This position serves as a lead worker, overseeing daily tasks, supervising staff, and managing operations in the absence of the Crew Chief. The role involves operating various types of equipment for maintenance, performing cemetery-specific tasks, planning funeral services, maintaining equipment, and potentially facilitating minor plumbing repairs. The Equipment Operator II level requires the ability to step into the crew chief position and perform leadership duties.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of related work experience as a heavy equipment operator or demonstrated proficiency in operation of equipment while working in the Parks Division is required (Equipment Operator I).
  • Three (3) years of experience as a heavy equipment operator is required (Equipment Operator II).
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A valid Texas driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.
  • Heavy Equipment Operator Training Certificate is required (Equipment Operator II).
  • Bloodborne Pathogens training and HazCom training are required within Sixty (60) days of employment.
  • Ability to travel to different sites.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in cemetery work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment work.
  • Knowledge of safe driving principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of computers and other technology that are pertinent to the completion and documentation of work.
  • Skill to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Skill to operate large and small equipment such as backhoe, mowers, line trimmers etc.
  • Skill to make plumbing repairs to pipes.
  • Skill to manage time and resources efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform calculations and organize information to accurately complete reports.
  • Ability to establish and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Responsibilities

  • Operate City vehicle and various types and sizes of equipment such as tractors, riding mowers, mulchers, edgers, ditchers and line trimmers in the maintenance of right-of-ways, boulevards, vacant lots, municipal grounds, ball fields, and city parks.
  • Perform daily tasks needed to provide landscape services for the cemetery.
  • Plan and execute funeral services, including site verification and setup, in the absence of the Crew Chief.
  • Perform tasks inherent to cemetery operations such as grave leveling, stone leveling, stone repair, etc.
  • Maintain equipment used daily through lubrication, sharpening, cleaning, and fluid checks.
  • Oversee the cemetery crew in the Crew Chief's absence and enter work performed into the Work Order System (Asset Essentials).
  • Facilitate minor plumbing repairs as needed.
  • Work in conjunction with Parks Division as a team player to help where needed.
  • Step into crew chief position when crew chief is not present and perform role in a leadership manner, by ensuring all tasks are executed without any setbacks (Equipment Operator II).
  • Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
