The Equipment Operator I operates a variety of heavy equipment including truck and trailer combinations, tractors with attachments, loaders, sprayers, sweepers, forklifts, backhoes, water trucks, box trucks, weed eaters, blowers, toros, riding and push mowers, and dump trucks to complete assigned projects such as mowing operations and debris removal. This role involves performing heavy manual labor such as cutting and clearing vegetation and debris, landscaping, tree trimming, and clearing debris. The operator is responsible for ensuring the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, being aware of overhead utility lines, and checking for traffic and underground utilities. Additionally, the position requires performing routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools, identifying and reporting equipment malfunctions, and cleaning equipment. The operator will inspect mowing areas for potential hazards like manhole covers, rocks, gas lines, and concrete chunks, marking them as needed. This role also involves assisting crew members, performing manual labor in construction and maintenance projects, potentially functioning as a crew leader and training employees, and recording work completed. Driving a City vehicle to and from job sites is also a responsibility. The position requires the ability to listen and understand directions, exercise independent judgment and initiative, and perform work without close supervision. Maintaining all necessary licenses, certifications, and clearances without interruption is mandatory, as is working the assigned schedule and complying with the City's timekeeping and attendance policy. Other duties may be assigned.
