About The Position

The Equipment Operator I operates a variety of heavy equipment including truck and trailer combinations, tractors with attachments, loaders, sprayers, sweepers, forklifts, backhoes, water trucks, box trucks, weed eaters, blowers, toros, riding and push mowers, and dump trucks to complete assigned projects such as mowing operations and debris removal. This role involves performing heavy manual labor such as cutting and clearing vegetation and debris, landscaping, tree trimming, and clearing debris. The operator is responsible for ensuring the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, being aware of overhead utility lines, and checking for traffic and underground utilities. Additionally, the position requires performing routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment, identifying and reporting malfunctions, and cleaning equipment. The operator will inspect mowing areas for potential hazards, assist crew members, perform manual labor in construction and maintenance projects, and may function as a crew leader or train employees. This role also involves recording work completed, driving a City vehicle to job sites, and exercising independent judgment and initiative while working with minimal supervision. Maintaining necessary licenses, certifications, and clearances is crucial, as is adhering to the assigned schedule and City policies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing.
  • Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements.
  • Valid Texas driver's license and good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License Class B (CDL).

Responsibilities

  • Operates truck and trailer combination, tractors with attachments, loaders, sprayers, sweepers, forklifts, backhoes, water truck, box truck, weed eaters, blowers, toros, riding and push mowers and dump trucks to complete assigned projects such as mowing operations, debris removal.
  • Performs a variety of heavy manual labor such as cutting and clearing vegetation and debris, landscaping, tree trimming, and clearing debris.
  • Ensures the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for overhead utility lines, and checking for traffic and underground utilities.
  • Performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on mowing equipment and hand and power tools such as checking oil, fuel levels, tires, lubricating and safety operations.
  • Identifies and reports equipment malfunctions and cleans equipment as needed.
  • Inspects area to be mowed for manhole covers, rocks, gas lines, and concrete chunks and other debris or obstacles.
  • Marks hazards as needed for sighting for mower or tractor.
  • Assists crew members in performing their duties.
  • Performs required manual labor in construction and maintenance projects.
  • Can function as a crew leader and may be assigned to train employees.
  • Records information pertaining to work completed.
  • Drives a City vehicle to and from job sites.
  • Exercises independence of judgment and initiative in performing the duties of the position.
  • Performs work without close supervision at times.
  • Maintains all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements without interruption.
  • Works the assigned schedule and complies with City timekeeping and attendance policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
