About The Position

The City of Irvine is looking for a skilled and dependable Part-Time Equipment Mechanic to keep our vehicles and equipment running safely and smoothly. In this job, you’ll work on cars, trucks, and power-driven equipment; the work includes oil changes and brake repairs to diagnosing more complex problems using special tools and computers. You’ll be part of a team that helps our city by keeping emergency and service vehicles ready to roll. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent with vocational or technical training in automotive or equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience in automotive or equipment maintenance and repair experience.
  • Or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.
  • Strong communication skills to explain and clarify repair procedures to others and follow instructions accurately.
  • The ability to read and interpret work orders, schematics, manuals, and inspection standards.
  • Experience using diagnostic, electrical, and welding tools to troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, A/C, and electrical systems.
  • Good judgment and problem-solving skills when evaluating repair options and completing tasks.
  • Familiarity with vehicle emissions standards, safety regulations, and workplace safety practices.
  • Basic computer skills for tracking maintenance records and performing job-related tasks.
  • Solid math skills to calculate measurements, quantities, and perform basic shop math.
  • Willingness to work in varying conditions, including outdoors, around noise, dust, grease, and occasionally in high-traffic or inclement weather areas.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair City vehicles and equipment powered by gasoline, diesel, natural gas, and propane.
  • Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, lubrication, brake service, and tire repairs.
  • Tune engines and troubleshoot using computerized diagnostic tools.
  • Service and repair electrical systems, including lighting and air conditioning (A/C) components.
  • Install aftermarket accessories and fabricate necessary brackets or mounts.
  • Operate and maintain light to medium-duty construction vehicles and fleet equipment.
  • Conduct Biannual Inspection Terminal vehicle safety inspections.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, time, and materials used.
  • Assist with parts ordering, pickup, and inventory management.
  • Respond to emergency road service calls and assist with police investigations as needed.
  • Respond to emergency call outs and may be required to be on-call.
  • Provide support to other mechanics as needed.
  • Use a computer to perform job related tasks and maintenance tracking.
