About The Position

USM ReRents, a well-established and profitable aerial lift re-rental company, has a career opportunity for a skilled and experienced Equipment Mechanic. This role involves assessing, troubleshooting, and repairing various pieces of aerial construction equipment at our Portage, IN facility. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated individual with a high level of technical aptitude, skilled in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining aerial work platforms such as large booms, telehandlers, and spider lifts. USM ReRents is a leader in the re-rental of aerial construction lifts across the United States and Canada, with equipment including ultra-boom lifts, heavy-capacity telescoping material handlers, and spider/crawler lifts. This shop-based mechanic position is crucial for repairing and performing preventive maintenance on USM-owned boom lifts, telehandlers, and spider lifts to ensure they are ready for the rental fleet.

Requirements

  • 5+ years' mechanic/repair experience.
  • 3+ years' aerial work platform equipment experience (on boom lifts, ultra-booms, telehandlers, and/or spider lifts).
  • Intermediate-to-advanced level of hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Solid understanding of gas & diesel engines & electric motors.
  • Ability to produce quality workmanship and work in a safe manner.
  • Good work ethic and a positive attitude.
  • Willingness to learn, grow skills, and apply technical training concepts to real-world equipment needs.
  • Physical abilities to function as a mechanic (kneel, stoop, bend, twist, and lift/move occasionally heavy parts).
  • Computer skills for data entry, transmission, and email communication.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Completion of online training where available.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous factory/manufacturer training and/or certification.
  • Communication skills – the ability to positively interact with, update, and partner with your Fleet Service Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on articulating booms, ultra (80 – 180 ft) booms, spider lifts, and heavy-capacity & rotational telehandlers.
  • Perform initial repair inspections and operational tests of equipment.
  • Perform service, repairs, and preventative maintenance as required.
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical issues with poorly-functioning equipment; run related diagnostics; rebuild hydraulic cylinders, replace worn/damaged parts and fluids.
  • Create accurate repair lists with assistance of a Fleet Service Specialist.
  • Perform (ANSI-required) annual inspections on man-lifts.
  • Assist with the purchasing of parts and with creating related purchase orders.
