About The Position

The Department of Facilities Services at Tufts University is responsible for the efficient and cost-effective operations, maintenance, and management of all university facilities, encompassing approximately 5 million square feet across three campuses. Services include facility maintenance, capital maintenance, IT systems for operations, energy and utilities, recycling, event services, grounds maintenance, and facility condition assessment. Facilities Services plays a critical role in managing a significant deferred maintenance investment and collaborates closely with departments responsible for public health and safety, and capital project planning, design, and construction. This position is considered essential and reports to facilities management. The Vehicle Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the repair of the University's vehicles, including automobiles, trucks, buses, grounds equipment, lawn mowers, golf carts, and tractors. The role requires experience and knowledge in the operation, maintenance, and repair of internal combustion and hybrid engines, vehicle and engine accessories, electrical and cooling systems, hydraulic and power-takeoff systems, and engine-driven vehicles and equipment. The mechanic must follow standard operating procedures, comply with safety regulations, and meet deadlines. Duties include performing complex maintenance, repair, and overhaul of vehicles and various specialty equipment, coordinating daily activities of the campus motor pool, and providing repairs for a range of vehicles. The position also involves assisting in training other employees, safely handling hazardous materials, supervising utility workers and student employees, driving vehicles, leading small teams, preparing parts and tools, and maintaining tools and records. The mechanic will utilize the university’s continuous maintenance management system (CMMS) for logs and adhere to university operating procedures for resource use and time tracking.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience as a mechanic
  • At least five current years working in the field
  • Must have working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems
  • Must have good oral and written communications skills with the ability to read, write and comprehend the English language
  • Must possess solid time management and organizational skills, work well under pressure and juggle multiple tasks effectively prioritizing competing requirements
  • Must be able to work professionally and tactfully with fellow employees, faculty, students and staff; deal with difficult people and / or stressful scenarios
  • Must Maintain a professional appearance at all times and adhere to the University’s uniform policy
  • Must be physically able to meet all job requirements
  • Solid time management skills including the ability to multi-task, tactfully deal with unforeseen challenges and people and work well in a team setting with other technicians and trades professionals
  • Required to work indoors and outdoors in potentially cramped space, during inclement weather year round
  • Valid US Driver's license Upon Hire
  • Valid Massachusetts automotive service excellence certification (ASE) Upon Hire
  • 2B hoister's License Upon Hire

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's Degree or higher in related field
  • Trade school graduation, or equivalent and four years of experience as a mechanic
  • Excellent driving record for the past 5 years
  • Proficiency in the use Maximo CMMS system
  • Fleet Rock or other vehicle work order software

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily activities of the campus motor pool.
  • Provide repairs for vehicles for and not limited to the following: Class II and III automobiles, trucks, vans, busses and golf carts.
  • Perform tune-ups, grease vehicles, test pollution controls, test electrical equipment, pneumatic, hydraulic systems. etc.
  • Service and replace, but not limited, to the following: clutches, brakes, mufflers, front-end parts, electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Service and repair hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Maintain and repair snow equipment including but not limited to the following: sanders and rotary and reel lawn mowers.
  • Scrape, sand and paint parts.
  • Pump gas and maintain distribution records.
  • Assist in training employees in the same or similar position.
  • Perform similar or related duties as required.
  • Safely handle cleaning lubricating materials and fuels with hazardous content.
  • Supervise one or more Utility Worker II and/or student employees.
  • Driving vehicles / using tools necessary to do the job.
  • Capable of leading small teams on assignments as necessary.
  • Responsible for the daily preparation of the parts and tools for each day’s activities.
  • Completes work in a timely and workman like manner.
  • Coordinates work functions with fellow workers.
  • Coordinate with assigned manager for the use of non-stock University tools and ensure they are returned to the appropriate place in a timely manner.
  • Participate in University-wide internal training/meetings as required.
  • Attend approved Johnson Controls Metasys classes and/or training (or other vendor training approved by the managers)
  • Maintain and safeguard University tools in a professional manner.
  • Maintain equipment manuals and repair records.
  • Maintain “in house” inventory of parts for emergency/off-hour repairs.
  • May direct work of student workers as assigned.
  • Respond to on-call and overtime requirements as needed.
  • Perform similar or related duties as required.
  • Creates and maintains timely and accurate maintenance logs utilizing the university’s continuous maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Understands and adheres to university operating procedures pertaining to the use of resources, time tracking and logging of timely and accurate maintenance and repair activities utilizing division and university systems of records.
